2) My electric has gone off, help!

We have written many articles and blogs and stored them on our website just for you, our customer to help you when things look bleak. If you find that you have no electric then there may be some sensible steps to take before calling us:

  • Is there absolutely no electric at all?

If yes then there may be a local power cut. Check to see if anything has tripped at the consumer unit / fuse board and if not then perhaps ring 105. 105 will put you through to the local electricity network operator and they will be able to tell you if there is any scheduled maintenance, faults or other issues with the supply to your home and others in your area.

  • Has something tripped?

If so then its probably a good idea to go to our help sheet and see it that helps, we have written help sheets to save you money and try our best to assist you without charging to come out. Just click here to be taken to our information on restoring your power.

  • Is there a burning smell?

Sometimes loose or worn electrical connections can create excessive resistance and heat and start to smoulder or even catch fire. IF you can smell burning and have no power then call us immediately as we will need to attend to put your electrical installation right!

3) Can you carry out non-emergency electrical work at night?

Yes, if it is necessary for us to. We understand that some of our customers live busy lives and are not available Monday to Friday during normal working hours or if they are they may be working from home. We do offer a service where we can carry out certain repairs and installations out of hours, at weekends and evenings where needed. We also offer an emergency 24 hour electric specialist service where we can attend very quickly if you have power problems.

6) The power goes off and on again?

This is a potentially very serious situation and if this is occurring in your home then you should follow the steps above by calling 105 to see if there is electrical work being carried out locally in the street. If there is no local problem then you should call us immediately to come and investigate. A problem like this indicates that there may be loose wiring in the mains box and this can cause a fire if left. We have replaced many mains electrical boxes / consumer units after such an event and it is important to get the problem attended to quickly to limit any damage or fire risk.

7) I’m worried about the age of my electrics

Many electrical installations are left far too long between electrical checks, rewires and upgrades and as such there is sometimes a good reason to worry. Most electrical installations are designed to give decades of faultless service assuming they are looked after, regularly tested and only worked on or added to by a competent electrician.

The photograph shows a consumer unit that should have been replaced a long time ago and offers little protection against electric shock. The wiring is likely to be very old and in need of replacing and the whole installation could benefit from an electrical inspection to find out the condition of everything.

Please do not sit and worry about your electrical installation, we are here to help and we can carry out safety electrical checks for you to let you know if there are any hidden problems within the installation that require attention. We will be able to compare your wiring to the current safety wiring regulations and let you know if any changes or upgrades need to be made to bring the installation up to the required safety standard.

8) My fusebox has fuse wire in, is this bad?

Not necessarily always, however it does indicate that the fuse box is now very old and should be replaced. We have much better and more modern consumer units that offer safety features that the old units simply do not have. Importantly, if there is ever a component that fails within this fuse box then it is unlikely that new parts can be found and as such the unit will require replacing.

Planned consumer unit replacement is much better than an emergency replacement on a Saturday night in the dark of course and much more convenient. 😊
