There are many different types of electrical switch in the consumer unit. These switches will all trip for different types of electrical faults and narrowing down the problem can be difficult unless you have the correct electrical test equipment and the right knowledge to carry out the inspection.

There are some things that you can do to try and get to the bottom of these electrical faults. Try unplugging all the equipment in your home to see if the consumer unit switches will then turn back on. If that does not work then its likely you need an emergency electrician to assist.

4) Water in Electrics

Water and electricity do not mix. When they do, there can be a risk of fire, serious electrical damage and the repairs can be substantial. When water enters a fuse box, there is normally a need for a new fuse box to be installed for safety reasons.

If your fuse box is a new style unit, it is often possible to replace the switches and other equipment rather than the whole box.
If there has been a lot of rain recently then check any outdoor electrics to see if there may be water that has entered. If possible, turn off any outdoor switches, sockets, flood lights or other equipment. Disconnect pond pumps and shed supplies to see if the power comes back on.

Once water has gotten into the system, it may sometimes be necessary to conduct an electrical inspection to determine what damage has been done. This will produce an Electrical Installation Condition Report detailing any faults, hidden dangers and will highlight the condition of your wiring.

5) Intermittent Power Loss

Intermittent power loss can occur when power surges affect your electrical system. Where there are loose connections for example, high power demand can exacerbate the issues creating burnt out connections. The intermittent power loss will then occur when periods of high electrical demand are placed upon the system.

Think of an electric shower that uses a lot of electrical power. This is one of the most common causes of intermittent power loss. When the shower draws all its power, the electrical supply can fail, returning a few minutes after switching the shower off.
If it is safe to do so, check if the fuse box is hot. A hot fuse box can indicate that there are loose connections causing overheating.
A hot consumer unit or fuse board can mean that electrical components are stressed inside.

There could also be an issue with the incoming mains supply equipment. One way of checking this is to call your electricity company and ask if the meter is working correctly. Where modern smart meters are installed, the electricity company can often check the meter function whilst you are on the phone to them.

Should there be no issues with the meter then it may be the mains supply itself. Call 105 freephone to check if there are any electricity supply issues in your local area. They will let you know if there are any planned or emergency works being carried out in your area.

If you need any help with intermittent power loss then give us a call as you may need an EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN IN WARRINGTON to assist!

There are many other services that we can help you with such as:

  • Electrical Inspections

  • Electrical Certificates

  • Circuit Breaker Replacement

8.1) Electrical Inspections

What are electrical inspections and why are they needed?

An electrical inspection is known by many terms such as Safety Check, Electrical Report, Landlord Report, Safety Certificate, Electrical Check and more. The correct term however is, a Periodic Electrical Inspection.

The periodic electrical inspection will produce a 5–7-page document known as an Electrical Installation Condition Report.

The inspection process SHOULD take several hours and involve a thorough visual inspection of the electrical accessories and equipment along with in-depth testing of the electrical circuits using specialised equipment.

BEWARE of cheap inspections as these are likely to involve little testing and / or an expensive list of sometimes unnecessary ‘remedial works’.

WE only conduct thorough testing and inspection in accordance with the BS7671 wiring regulations and IET guidance. This is especially important when buying a home as you are investing serious money into a long-term asset, you want the electrical installation to be checked thoroughly!

8.2) Fuse Box upgrades

We not only offer an EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN IN WARRINGTON service, we also offer fuse box upgrades. Why would you want a new consumer unit or fuse box? Well, there are many reasons actually.

  • Upgraded Protection for home wiring
  • Whole house surge protection
  • Upgraded Electric Shock Protection
  • Convenience in the event of a fault
  • To satisfy home insurance
  • To replace dated or dangerous equipment

We do recommend an electrical inspection is carried out prior to the installation of a new consumer unit. Without checking the electrical system first, there could be hidden dangers and issues that mean a new consumer unit may not turn on, stay on or that electrical circuits have to be disconnected for safety reasons.

8.3) Electrical Certificates

There are a whole variety of electrical certificates that are required under different circumstances.

These are:

  • Electrical Installation Condition Report
  • Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate
  • Electrical Installation Certificate
  • Visual Inspection Certificate
  • Building Control Notification compliance certificate

Each of these certificates will be issued under different circumstances. We are always happy to advise which certificate may be needed and when, even if you are not planning to use our services right now.

8.4) Replacing Old Aluminium Wiring

Aluminium wiring in the UK was used for a short period during a copper shortage during the early to mid-1970s. Whilst it served a purpose, this type of wiring can create problems in electrical installations. As an EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN IN WARRINGTON, we do come across this wiring from time to time.

If left untouched it is sometimes ok but it is susceptible to burning out through loose connections. Connections with this type of wiring cannot easily be re-tightened as the aluminium is brittle and will usually crack or crush resulting in connections that cannot be re-made.

If you have old aluminium wiring in your home, it may be necessary to have a rewire carried out to replace the outdated and sometimes dangerous wiring.

8.5) Indoor and Outdoor Lights

If you have require new lights installing inside or outside then we offer a full service to include light replacement, security lights, PIR sensor lights, indoor and outdoor lighting and more.

Replacing a light fitting is not always a straightforward job especially in older properties. Many modern light fittings require only a single electrical cable to be installed where older properties may have several electrical cables in the ceiling making moder light installation difficult.

Its also important when installing class 1 or metal light fittings that the earthing is properly checked by an electrician with the right test equipment. Failure to correctly earth a metal light fitting along with checking the earth path can result in electrical shock risk occurring in the event of a fault.

The earth is vital to all light fittings new and old where they specify one is required. Without a suitable low resistance earth path, there could be danger present.

8.6) New Sockets

We do not always have enough electrical plug sockets around the home. Installing additional plug sockets means that certain electrical safety requirements have to be checked.

Earthing, Bonding, and circuit safety are paramount and should be checked prior to additional plug sockets being added in accordance with regulation 132.16 of BS7671 Requirements for wiring installations.

Don’t worry, we know the rules, regulations, and testing requirements so we have you covered.

If you need more plug sockets then just get in touch on 01925 595 980

8.7) Circuit Breaker Replacement

If a circuit breaker, trip switch or other fuse box switch is not working properly, tripping intermittently or otherwise causing bother then it may need replacing.

The most common cause for unwanted tripping is actually an electrical fault and NOT a faulty switch.

Whatever the cause, we can get to the bottom of it and replace any switches that need replacing for you.
