1) Fuses keep blowing, what is happening?🤔

If you have a BLOWN FUSE BOX IN WARRINGTON or the surrounding areas, then you are in the right place for information. Our website is full of blogs and help sheets aimed at helping all our existing and potential customers. 

If you have a fuse box like the one pictured in this blog post then this is now very old. The equipment is now obsolete and has likely seen better days as well. These types of fuse box contain fuse wire inside the fuse carriers. The fuse wire is designed to blow when it sees enough current flowing through a circuit to damage the wiring. There are a number of issues with these fuse boxes that make them problematic or potentially dangerous and we will outline these further on in the blog. 

If you find that you have fuse wire continually blowing then there is a fault on the circuit which will likely require an electrician to investigate it for you. Occasionally there may be a faulty appliance causing the issue and in these cases removing the appliances plug from the plug socket will likely resolve the problem. 

It does of course depend on which fuse wire is blowing!

2) What are all the different colours on the fuse box?

Each of the fuse carriers will have a colour. Usually White, Blue, Yellow and Red are the most common. The white indicates that the circuit is a 5 amp circuit and should have the relevant 5 amp sized fuse wire installed. The blue is a 15 amp circuit, the Yellow a 20 amp and the Red is a 30 amp. Each carrier should have the relevant sized fuse wire installed. 

Potential danger can come when a frustrated homeowner installs a larger fuse wire into a fuse carrier intended for a lower rated circuit. If a large fuse wire is installed into a 5 amp fuse carrier for example then it is likely that the circuit was only ever intended for low powered lighting. Whilst the fuse may then not blow there is a very real chance that the cables in the circuit may catch fire before the newly installed thick fuse wire decides to blow!

3) Can I replace the fuse wire myself?

You absolutely can. Make sure you have the correct sized fuse wire for the carried in which you are installing it and that you follow the appropriate safety guidelines. If this is something you have not done before then please look up the information on how to carry this out safely. 

If the fuse wire blows again then there is likely an issue that will require an electrician. It is important not to continually replace fuse wire in this manner as the system is telling you there is an issue and ignoring the issue could result in permanent damage to the consumer unit or the wiring system.

4) Should I have my fuse box replaced?

That’s not a bad idea. 

The fault will not be rectified if the fuse box is replaced, however. If you have a BLOWN FUSE BOX IN WARRINGTON or the surrounding areas then its important that the issue is investigated before considering the replacement of the fuse box / consumer unit. 

A new consumer unit contains modern technology which is brilliant at picking up on faults in a wiring system that an old fuse wire style fuse box will miss. For this reason it is important that before having a fuse box replaced with a brand new consumer unit that the electrical installation is fully tested and inspected! There is no point installing a brand new consumer unit for it not to turn on when it detects pre existing faults in the system!

Whilst a fuse box of this age may seem to work okay there are likely to be several key safety features that are missing in comparison to a modern consumer unit and an upgrade should strongly be considered.

5) My fuse box is damaged, can you repair it?

This very much depends on the type of fuse box, the type of damage and whether parts are still available. We do carry a large number of spare parts for many consumer units and fuse boxes from decades ago so there is a chance we could repairs something for you. The best way of finding out is if you send us a picture or two of the broken parts. We can then have a look and send you a quote for fixing it. Sometimes it may be necessary to replace the entire unit but we will cross that bridge when we come to it. 😊

6) I have replaced the fuse wire but it still doesn’t work?

Occasionally we will get a call from a customer that has replaced parts themselves and now nothing is working or the circuit itself is not working. There are certain situations where we cannot offer advice online or over the phone and this is one of them. Sometimes it is necessary to employ the services of a trusted local expert electrician that can come and investigate the issue for you. Unless you have had sufficient training, experience and knowledge it is simply not safe to start investigating electrical systems.
