Whilst there are many videos on popular internet sites regarding how to change your own light fitting, socket, switch and so on, there are no videos on how this work can be safely tested once carried out.
As an Electrician in Lowton and covering from Liverpool to Warrington I see many installations that have had DIY work carried out over the years. Whilst it is entirely possible to change your own socket, light fitting, switch and so on how do you ensure that the work carried out complies with BS7671?
The simple answer is, you can’t!
As a Qualified Insured and Experienced Electrician I can tell you that swapping your own electrical accessories or carrying out work on your own electrical installation should only be done by a professional. Yes, the light may turn on once it is installed, yes the socket may appear to work fine….. but….. did you know that these things can function without an earth for instance? Its entirely possible for these things to function without the vital safety features of CPC, Earthing, Bonding, Correct protective device selection, RCD protection and so on. These are a whole host of safety features that need to be in place in your home that DIY cannot check, test or confirm.
An electrician replacing a light fitting for you would, I would complete some testing of the system to ensure that the work carried out is safe, compliant with the regulations and is suitable for your home. Often you will receive a certificate (nearly all work requires a certificate of some kind did you know?) and will be able to check for any issues whilst they are there.
The picture shows a very poor DIY attempt at installing a light fitting, the dangers here are clear but some can be hidden behind fancy fittings up on the ceiling.
