Electrical Certificate

An Electrical Certificate can mean many things. There are different types of certification for different kinds of works carried out.

There is an EICR……

An EICR is often referred to as any of the following;

  • Landlord Electrical Safety Certificate
  • Electrical Safety Check
  • Electrical Homebuyer Survey
  • Electrical Inspection

There is an EIC…….

An Electrical Installation Certificate. This is a certificate usually issued when a consumer unit is changed for a replacement or moved from its original location. This also applies when a completely new circuit is installed. This certificate is issued when the electrician undertakes installation work. This is then normally notifiable to building control after which you will not only receive an EIC but a building control compliance certificate a few days later.

There is a MWC or MWEIC.

This is a minor works certificate and usually accompanies an extension of an existing circuit or an alteration to an existing circuit.

The importance of certification is to prove that adequate testing has been carried out and that the electrician is prepared to sign paperwork to that effect. To show that the required testing and results are satisfactory and that the part of the installation which they have worked on is safe, up to standards, complies with BS7671 (electrical regulations), building regulations and so on.
