If you are reading this short article then you have found the electrical emergency specialists. We are 24 hour electricians for emergencies. You have come to the right place. We have been tending to home emergencies for many years and have the absolute best professionals in place to help you at a moments notice.
So if the power has gone off and you have no electric, no sockets, no cooker etc
The first thing to do is to find your electrical box! Referred to as a fuse box, consumer unit, fuse board, trip switch box and no doubt other names. If you are unsure where this is then it may be an idea to check the following places:
- The understairs cupboard
- To either side on the front door / cupboards
- The garage
Like most of us, we forget all about this important box and tend to cover it in coats, shoes and other household items that we cant seem to find a place for.
This first picture is a typical consumer unit / fuseboard. This is what you need to be looking for in your property.
Steps to take:
- Locate the consumer unit
- Lift the flap is there is one
- Examine the trip switches to see if any are in the down position
- If you have lost a lot of power for example sockets, shower, cooker etc then it may be a device known as an RCD that has tripped. Also known as an RCB, RCCB, ELCB. If this device has tripped then turn all the other trip switches ( miniature circuit breakers or MCB’s ) off and the try to turn the RCD back on.
- If this turns back on then you may be able to turn the circuit breakers on one at a time.
- If no circuit breakers have tripped but there is no power in the house then this is indicative of a total mains loss. This can be caused by a local power cut or by a more serious issue in your installation. In the first instance you may wish to check with your neighbours to see if they are also suffering a power cut. If not then phone us on 0151 351 4011 as it is likely you will need an emergency electrician
The important thing to remember is this:
Even if you can restore power to your property by resetting the trip switches / circuit breakers in your consumer unit you may still need someone to investigate the cause of this. By resetting devices more than once in a short period of time you are simply treating the symptom and not the cause. These devices are not designed to continually trip and be reset and eventually they will need replacing which is often expensive and time consuming or worse, a new consumer unit if the parts are no longer available.
It is therefore important to always call when there is a problem. Resetting the switches yourself is normally just a temporary solution. It is always best to have a professional investigate as soon as possible.
IMPORTANT
If your fuse board has no cover and you can see wires like the picture below then DO NOT try to reset anything yourself. Call us on 0151 351 4011 immediately as this can only be dealt with by a professional. Serious electric shock risk is present.
Electrical Faults Fixed are always on hand for emergency callouts, It’s what we do best.
