1) What is an electrical emergency?

An ELECTRICAL EMERGENCY in Liverpool is a situation where any one of the following can have occurred:

  • Power loss – Total or partial
  • Crackling or popping noises from electrical accessories or equipment
  • Smell of burning or smoke from electrical accessories or equipment
  • Trip switch won’t reset
  • Flickering lights
  • Melted or badly dis-coloured sockets or switches

This is not an exhaustive list but covers most electrical emergency situations. The list is enough for most people to be concerned and to require some advice or an electrician to attend. None of the things mentioned are particularly good and should you experience any of the issues then please call us so we can attend. If you are anywhere between Liverpool and Warrington we can help, we serve many areas in and around the M62. See our page for the list of areas that we cover here:

2) What if I have a total power loss?

If you have an absolute and complete power outage then it may NOT be your electrical installation. It may well be that there is an issue with the electrical supply from the street to your property. Before you call us, if you have a total power outage then it is sensible to call 105 to ascertain if there is a problem in the supply network for example, work being carried out on power lines.

If there are no known problems with the supply and your neighbours appear to have power then absolutely call us as we will need to come and investigate the issue for you. Total power loss in your electrical installation can mean fairly serious problems such as burnt out loose connections, possible fire risk, failed components in the consumer unit / fuse board and other issues. Please do not worry, we are more than familiar with all electrical issues and are ready to tackle any emergency situation.

3) There is smoke coming from electrical equipment

If there is smoke coming from your mains electrical equipment then call 105 immediately and follow their menu, they will normally dispatch an emergency engineer to you.

If you have smoke coming from something like a socket or switch then go to your fuse board / consumer unit and TURN EVERYTHING OFF, then call us, we need to attend to help you.

4) Water leak into electrics

There are many occasions when water has leaked into electrical systems and equipment. This can range from a few drops into a light or socket to a flood into the consumer unit / fuse box. No matter how much water has leaked into electrical accessories or equipment, it is strongly advised that you call your local emergency electrician to come and assess the damage, the safety of the electrical installation and whether it should remain turned on.
When water has entered a consumer unit it is sometimes necessary to replace the consumer unit. Where water has entered a socket or switch we always recommend changing these.

5) Cut through a cable

If you have accidentally cut through an electrical cable then this will need to be repaired. A cut cable can be very dangerous for a number of reasons:

  • Live ends exposed
  • Short circuit problems
  • Broken a circuit that now is unable to function correctly

Certain cables are not a problem if they have been cut for example old alarm cables where the alarm has been previously made and proved to be unpowered, dead and separated from the electrical supply. Data and phone cables don’t really carry over 50 volts and as such are not really any danger. Electric cables on the other hand are typically at or around 230 volts and will cause injury, burns or severe shock in the event of contact with live parts, accidently cutting or severing a cable.

You should contact us straight away if you have cut through a cable and are now unsure if it is safe. Certain cables we may be able to identify visually but attendance is normally still necessary to ensure we can prove the voltage is not harmful, disconnect cables where possible and necessary and ensure your safety. This is an ELECTRICAL EMERGENCY situation for sure.

6) Broken a light switch or socket

If you have accidentally broken a light switch or socket then it is important that this is replaced by an electrician. With the dawn of many internet video sites enabling people to show other people how things are done has come an entire wave of unsafe and downright dangerous information. Whilst changing a light switch or socket may seem like a simple task on the face of it, the requirements for ensuring compliance with BS7671 (590 page electrical wiring regulations) and EAWR1989 regulations are not easy to achieve if you do not know about them.

There needs to be electrical testing carried out with test equipment to ensure that circuits are continuous and earthed correctly following ANY electrical work. This cannot be achieved with a DIY video and some screwdrivers unfortunately. Leave dangerous electrical work to the professionals who are trained and experienced. We are always happy to offer free quotes for work you may need carried out and it is often cheaper to employ the services of an electrician before a job goes wrong and ends up costing more.

7) Trip switch won’t reset

When this happens it is usually a sign that there is a problem with one of your electrical circuits rather than a faulty trip switch. It is a common misconception that a switch is faulty, more often than not, the switch is fine and doing its job perfectly at least until it is reset too many times!

It is important that you do not try to reset your switch too many times as they are not designed to be reset continually like this. Each time a switch trips, it is turning off your electrical supply and to do this it has to absorb a great deal of electrical energy in a safe and controlled manner. It is only capable of doing this so many times before failure. We take no pleasure in telling customers they need new consumer units or equipment in the middle of the night ☹
