1) When might I need an electrical fault report?🤔
An electrical fault report is not really the name of a standard report for electricians. We can produce reports for our customers following an attendance at a property. This can be particularly useful for insurance purposes if a customer was looking to have their costs reimbursed through their insurance company. The insurance company may ask for a report on the works carried out and decide if the works would have been covered or not under a policy with them for example.
Our costs for electrical fault reporting, and job documentation do vary so it is important to ask us for the costs for your situation. Written reports including photographic documentation, works carried out, recommendations for improvement and commentary on compliance with electrical regulations can be provided on request.
Back to top2) What other types of electrical reports are there?💭
The most common form of ‘electrical report’ is the EICR. This stands for Electrical Installation Condition Report. This document is produced as a result of a periodic electrical inspection and includes a number of test results and recommendations regarding the electrical installation. It compares the current installation to the latest edition of the wiring regulations and outlays any improvements that are needed in order to make the installation safer. There are two outcomes with an EICR and those are ‘Satisfactory’ or ‘Unsatisfactory’. There is no pass or fail, so to speak.
The document itself is usually 6 to 8 pages long and contains vital information on the condition of an electrical installation for current and future owners along with any electrician likely to work on the electrical installation in the future.
3) How long does an EICR take to ‘do’?⏱️
The actual paperwork for the EICR takes around 30 minutes to 45 minutes on average. The testing and inspection process required in order to fill in the paperwork takes anywhere from 1 to 4 hours depending upon the number of consumer units, circuits and to a lesser extent, the size of the property.
An EICR cannot be produced without sufficient testing and inspection of the electrical installation, consumer unit and connected circuits. This is a process that takes time to carry out thoroughly and correctly. Great care must be taken and suspicion aroused when offered a very cheap electrical inspection. It is likely that with a very low price comes very little testing, along with very little inspection and any electrical report that follows may not give an accurate representation of the condition of the electrical installation.
Make sure to ask how long your inspection will take and what will and won’t be tested. 😊
Back to top4) What are other names for EICR?🔍
There are a number of different names for this document and process:
- Safety check
- Electrical safety check
- Landlord electrical safety check
- Electrical Inspection
- Landlord Certificate
- Electrical Certificate
- Electrical Check
- Periodic Inspection
- Electrical homebuyer survey
There are other names for this process and document but these are the most commonly used.
Back to top5) Who might need an EICR and why?🤷
Landlords require this document in order to be able to rent to tenants. The EICR must be satisfactory OR accompanied by other electrical documents showing work has been carried out to repair any defects in the electrical installation following an unsatisfactory EICR.
Home buyers do not require this document by law but it is a REALLY GOOD IDEA to get one. Most of our EICR customers are home buyers.
Sellers of property may require this document in order to prove that their property is in an acceptable electrical condition.
Back to top6) Cheap EICR?👨🔧
We cannot please everyone all of the time and inevitably some people will be let down. We do not compete to be the absolute cheapest quote for this service. Shock, horror right?
When buying an identical product from a store, it makes sense to try and save money and go with a store that sells that item at the lowest price right? Because, despite customer service, the product is the same isnt it? When buying a service such as an EICR, the service is what you are paying for not a product. This means that one service will be different from another and not exactly the same. We pride ourselves in conducting thorough and HONEST reporting on the conditions of electrical installations backed up by electrical wiring regulation numbers and sound engineering safety reasoning on WHY a condition may be dangerous or require remedial works to put right.
If electrical works are required then we will tell you what and why, in plain english until you are 100% clear. 😊 We will not baffle you with jargon, science or nonsense. In some cases, where an installation is very old, damaged or dangerous we may recommend a rewire. Often, we will not even be able to undertake the rewire for you but will still be honest with our recommendations.
7) How much is an EICR?💷
Prices for this service will vary but our prices can be seen in this link:

In order to give you a price we will need to see a picture of your consumer unit. The more electrical circuits you have, the more work is involved in testing it all, the higher the cost will be. That’s it. You can send a photograph of your electrical box, consumer unit, fuse box to us on WhatsApp (07858 136 955) and we will give you a quote within minutes.
