A lot of our customers are grateful to find us as there are not many ELECTRICIANS NEAR ME FOR SMALL JOBS and we are always happy to undertake these small jobs for our new and existing customers. Many tradespeople prefer to tackle the larger jobs that fill the diary and can be more profitable for their businesses.

2) What is considered a small electrical job?

There are several electrical jobs that may be considered ‘small’ for electricians. These could be jobs like, swapping a light fitting over, replacing a socket or switch front, installing a like for like replacement appliance, finding a straightforward non-emergency fault, replacing something that has been damaged and so on.

3) Are there any “5 minute” jobs?⏱️

I can guarantee that there are virtually NO 5-minute jobs, at least, jobs that are carried out correctly. The only possible exception would be screwing in a replacement light bulb I guess 😊 When a customer explains to us that their job is only a 5-minute job we know that they may have an unrealistic expectation of what might be involved. As electricians, we have a legal and moral obligation to carry out safety testing on all electrical works to ensure that any alterations, additions, or changes to the electrical system have been done in accordance with BS7671 wiring regulations and do not pose a danger to anyone. Customers do not generally know these requirements and what is involved in compliance with safety wiring regulations and do not take this time into account. Also invariably, nearly every job will take us longer than we anticipate and as such an expected 5-minute job will, as an absolute minimum take 20 minutes, plus travel to and from the job, collection of materials and so on. 😊

4) Installing additional plug sockets, a big job?

Installing additional plug sockets where there are currently no plug sockets can indeed be a bigger than expected job. Customers are sometimes surprised to hear about the work that may be involved in order to achieve this.
For instance, if your electrical system is more than a few years old it is entirely possible that upgrades to the earthing system and consumer unit may well be necessary in order to achieve the extra sockets. We have to ensure that the altered wiring complies with the safety wiring regulations and that the addition does not adversely affect the existing electrical circuit. In some cases, a new consumer unit may be necessary in order to install additional sockets if the consumer unit / fuse box is particularly old. This can make a seemingly small easy job into a much larger and more costly job. This is the unseen consequence of not regularly updating the electrical system in our homes, regulations change regularly and can mean that older installations are left behind when it comes to safety, new equipment, and testing.

5) Wiring up a new kitchen, a big job?⚡

Possibly. This depends on the existing consumer unit; the test results we achieve from any existing circuits and any safety upgrades that are necessary in order to start removing or replacing electrical wiring and accessories.
If there are a lot of changes due to take place then your electrician may decide it is best to rewire the electrical circuits in the kitchen rather than extending and moving existing electrical wiring. This has the added benefit of everything becoming brand new and not needing further work or repairs in the near future.

6) Are small jobs cheap to have done?

Most electricians will have a minimum charge, that is a fixed price beyond which they will be unable to financially carry out the work. This will vary from business to business. Our minimum charge is listed on our “costs” page. Generally, the smaller the job that needs to be carried out the more likely it is to fall under the minimum charge costs. Things that are covered typically covered under a minimum charge fee would be:
(excluding sundries and parts)

  • Swapping a customer supplied light fitting where the ceiling does not require strengthening, the cables do not require extending and there are no safety issues on the circuit found whilst testing.
  • Swapping a customer supplied socket or switch or couple of switches. Again, if there is an issue identified during the work such as a faulty cable, a missing earth or some other unforeseen issue then there may be a little extra work / cost involved in getting the job complete. This is neither your fault or the electrician’s fault and often the fault of a previous homeowner or just older buildings. 😊
  • Swapping a customer supplied appliance where no parts are required, no modification of the surrounding cabinetry is necessary etc.

7) How quickly can small jobs be done?🤔

We are able to slot smaller jobs in to our calendar fairly quickly. In some cases, same day or within a few days. The larger the job the more time is required and the more likely it is that we are unable to accommodate these jobs in a quick manner.

A home rewire of all circuits for example is likely to take several days to a week and once started would need to be completed as soon as possible. This type of job should really be done on consecutive days back-to-back and then the new installation handed over to the customer. As such, this type or work would take longer to book in as a block of time would need to be available in our diary to accommodate this.
