If your electric supply has been turned off by your consumer unit then there IS a problem.
Here at Electrical Faults Fixed, Electricians in Liverpool, we can help and advise with this.
The circuit breakers and RCD devices in your consumer unit do not trip for no reason. If one of these devices trips then there is a fault somewhere which will normally need to be investigated.
These devices in your electric box / consumer unit in your home are there to save the cables, save the electrical installation and to prevent fires and electric shocks within your home. Do not ignore them, they should not be regularly reset again and again without investigation from a qualified electrician.
Sometimes an appliance can set one of these devices off and we always recommend that you unplug all your appliances if this device will not reset. There is a help sheet on our website which will assist you and may save you some money. The help sheet is free to look at or download and will hopefully enable you to get your electrical system back up and running without the need to call us out.
Should you still have an issue and cant get your electrical system back up then please call us and we will come and investigate for you. There is often a more serious issue at play if none of the advice on our sheet works. We specialise in fault finding and testing. We always try to find the issue as quickly as possible, saving you money and time.
There are many reasons why your electrical installation might trip an RCD or circuit breaker, if you look carefully at the photo above you can see some slime on the bottom of the RCD device. A slug had crawled into the consumer unit and bridged two electrical connections causing a short circuit and meaning that the device would not reset. Only a competent and qualified electrician should ever open a consumer unit to investigate but once we did, we found this rather quickly. 😊
