1) What is an Emergency Electrician Call Out & what happens when you need one?
Most of the time the electrical supply and distribution system in our homes works unhindered and without issues and there is often no reason to worry. There are occasions that underlying issues can surface and cause problems however, when this happens you may find that you need an EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN CALL OUT. This type of emergency service is when you need an electrician immediately and cannot wait as it may be an electrical emergency, a danger, or a serious inconvenience. The action of an electrician attending your home as soon as physically possible is an EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN CALL OUT.
Back to top2) How quickly should the electrician arrive?⏱️
The electrician will normally arrive within two hours or at minimum within 8 hours depending upon the nature of the emergency. Some electrical emergencies are actually not dangerous but rather a real inconvenience and deciphering the difference is important. Whatever the reason for your electrical problems, we understand that you will be concerned and anxious about the situation and will require someone as soon as possible and that is what we always aim for. Most emergency calls are attended within two hours.
Back to top3) Is everything fixable first time & quickly?
This is a question where the answer depends on:
- The condition of your electrical installation
- The obstacles in the way of the electrician testing such as furniture
- The age of the wiring installation
- The availability of parts and the stock carried by the electrician
- The damage that has been caused and if an ‘economic repair’ is possible and many more factors.
The truth is, most issues are resolved within the first hour or two and with minimal parts costs but as with all things, there are those situations that require much more in-depth repairs or the necessity to return once clear access has been made to the areas of your home that are needing inspection and fault finding.
Back to top4) What types of electrical emergency are there?⚡
There are many occasions that could be considered an electrical emergency such as:
- Total power loss
- Partial power loss
- Flickering Lights
- Smoke coming from electrics
- Crackling or popping noises from sockets or other electrics
- Tripping of switches
- Fuses blowing
- Brown out (dim lights and things not working properly)
- Shocks from lights, sockets, appliances, pipework, or sinks.
All of these items and more can be considered to be an electrical emergency and you should contact your local electrical emergency specialist for an EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN CALL OUT without delay as these issues (even if they seem minor) can lead to much bigger problems if ignored.
Back to top5) Free diagnosis and call out?
At the time of writing, we know of no electrician or company that will travel to an address, perform fault finding and inspection works and not charge for this service. Quotes and estimates should normally be free of charge following any paid labour, fault finding or other chargeable services.
Back to top6) What does an emergency electrical call out cost?💷
Our research shows that an emergency electrician can cost between £120 and £300 for travel (2023/2024), attendance and up to the first hour’s labour. The actual cost will vary and depend upon the company you have called, the time of day (or night), the time of year (Christmas and holidays are normally more expensive) along with the part of the country you are in. Our emergency rates can be viewed on our emergency electrician page here:

The overall cost of the emergency may be more than the initial hour of course. Normally an hour’s labour is sufficient to ascertain the nature of the emergency, the affected circuit, or circuits and to carry out some fault finding to try and pinpoint the exact location of the fault. In some cases, further labour may be required in order to rectify the issue or further locate the issue within your home and your electrician should have a conversation with you about the possible additional costs.
Back to top7) How do I pay for an emergency electrician call out?
Most electricians or companies will require you to pay the first hours labour up front at the time of booking in order to guarantee your booking and to guarantee that you get your electrician as quickly as possible. Without this guarantee from both parties then the job would often not go ahead as customers would often cancel in favour of the promise of someone cheaper or quicker and companies would often take multiple jobs at once servicing the most profitable and leaving the rest. Once on site, should any further parts or labour be required in order to complete the job then payment with most companies is accepted by debit or credit card, bank transfer whilst on site or cash. Cheques are becoming less and less common and banking them can be a headache for some companies.
Back to top8) What if the problem cannot be repaired?🤔
Nearly every problem can be fixed although some will require a second visit or parts to be ordered. There are times when an economic repair on an aging wiring system will not be possible due to the age and condition of the wiring but these are rare. Most homes are rewired before electrical installations turn into this type of condition.
The problem can nearly always be fixed even if there is serious damage, it always just boils down to time and cost😊.
