How to fix a Trip Switch Problem in 3 Easy Steps
Many trip switch problems can begin elsewhere in the electrical system. For example, faulty sockets can cause total power cuts in your home under some circumstances. This is common with older fuse boxes and not only indicates that you have an electrical issue that needs tackling quickly but also means you really should have a new consumer unit installed to replace the old fuse box.
STEP 1
Go and unplug EVERYTHING from your socket outlets in your home. It is NOT ENOUGH to turn the sockets off, please unplug everything that you can. Don't forget the boiler, if the boiler has a switch, then turn this off also.
STEP 2
Try to turn the switch back on at the fuse box or consumer unit. If the switch turns back on and stays on then the issue could be a faulty appliance or piece of electrical equipment. If the switch will NOT stay on, call us immediately to come and investigate the issue for you.
STEP 3
If the switch stays on and does not trip again then begin to plug your appliances and electrical equipment back in one thing at a time. If the switch trips when you do this then the last piece of equipment that you connected could be faulty.
These 3 Steps will help in many cases but there are some instances where you may have to call us anyway. Not all electrical problems can be fixed remotely and many will require professional electrical services in order to establish the cause. We pride ourselves on exceptional service and as part of this, we help our customer with FREE information. Our free help sheet is available HERE, no email address or details required just our way of trying to help you out.

No Electrical Sockets Working?
Where you have no electrical sockets working, there are often a number of potential causes for this. One of the most common issues is that of faulty appliances. Check the fuse box, is there a switch tripped or fuse blown? Can you turn it back on?
(PHOTO: Cracked plug socket)
Where no switches have tripped and no fuses have blown, the problem could be quite serious!
Do not attempt to remove any sockets from the wall or fiddle about inside the fuse box, whilst there appears to be no power, there could be live connections and parts that will deal an electric shock to whomever interferes with the equipment. You need a 24-Hour emergency electrician service to assist you with your problems.

What is an Electrical Emergency?
An electrical emergency is any situation that introduces danger, serious inconvenience or failure of electrical systems that would cause significant expense or risk. An electrical emergency can be different things to different people. For example, your electrical circuit that powers the stair lift in your home fails meaning that you cannot get up to the bedrooms or bathroom. Whilst this is not life threatening it is seriously inconvenient and definitely an emergency.
There are many examples of electrical emergencies such as:
- Burning Smell from Fusebox
- Smoke from Electrical Outlets
- Flickering Lights
- Plug Sockets Crackling
- Tripping RCD or Switches
- Flooding into Electrics

When are Electrical Emergencies Likely to Occur?
There are times when electrical emergencies are more likely to occur than others. The winter months are particularly harsh on electrical systems as we demand that the lights are on for longer, cooking equipment is often used more often and electrical heating equipment can present a significant electrical load to our wiring and fuse box.
Wet weather is also a common time for electrical emergencies to occur as moisture can find its way into cabling, electrical equipment, and other parts of the wiring system.
How can Electrical Emergencies be Prevented?
Electrical emergencies can often be prevented by having professional and regular maintenance carried out. Regular inspections can pick up on clues that things are not quite right, can diagnose electrical faults and can help carry out minor repairs before they turn into expensive MAJOR repairs! As part of our high quality services, we offer Periodic Electrical Inspections. These electrical inspections are a process involving circuit inspections and testing, earthing and bonding checks, visual checks and live testing to ensure that your electrical system is in top condition.
What happens after an Electrical Inspection?
Once the electrical inspection has been carried out, you will receive a 5-7 page document called an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This document will outline the condition of the installation, detail the test results for any tests carried out and will highlight any dangerous situations, potential dangers, or non-compliances to the current wiring standards.
If there are any observations in the EICR then these will be allocated a classification code ranging in severity. You can read more about EICRs and the codes applied to situations HERE.

Faulty Circuit, Small Repair?
When a faulty circuit occurs in an electrical system it can cause havoc in some cases. You see, with some electrical installations, just one electrical fault can mean that there is a total power loss to the property. This is often the case with older fuse boxes where one small issue can cause the master RCD switch to trip and knock the power off to everything. Hot water heaters such as gas boilers and immersion tanks are a common culprit for an RCD trip switch turning off. This can often only be diagnosed by professional electricians with the right electrical test equipment and knowledge to carry out the diagnosis.
(PHOTO: Faulty Circuit Causing a Trip switch to operate)
Often times, a faulty circuit turns out to be a small piece of the circuit that has gone faulty. Let’s look at the plug sockets for instance. Where the plug sockets lose power, it is not a case that all the wiring, sockets and switch in the fuse box have gone faulty but rather a small portion of electrical cable or single socket has gone faulty. This will be detected by the fuse box or consumer unit and the power will be switched off until the fault is found and repairs carried out.

Free Quote for Fault Repairs?
Is there a free quote for fault repairs? Is diagnosis free? What is the cost for a tripping switch? These are many common questions that our customers will ask us and the answers are straightforward. Let’s get straight into it below.
Is there a free quote for fault repairs?
There will ALWAYS be free quotes for any further repairs beyond initial investigations. In many cases, electrical faults can be repaired whilst on site during the first hour of testing, inspection and fault finding. If further works are required then we will be able to tell you what is required, how much it will cost and what the wait time will be for any special parts (if needed)
Is Diagnosis Free?
No. Diagnosis of electrical faults, investigations and fault finding is not free. As a business, we have to charge for our time to cover equipment, consumables, overheads, wages and all the other costs that are associated with running a business. Diagnosis of electrical faults takes time and is most definitely chargeable. The cost of diagnosis / call out charge / emergency callout costs can be found on our dedicated emergency page. These costs are updated regularly.

What is the cost for a tripping switch?
This is a very common question that we are asked by customers and we understand that you need to know what the costs will be before requesting our services. The answer to this is, we DON'T KNOW. Let me explain:
Switches in consumer units and fuse boxes can trip for an almost endless list of reasons, in fact, the least likely reason that a switch trips is that there is a fault with the switch itself. Many customers have called me and been adamant that they have correctly diagnosed a faulty switch that needs replacing. If I were to replace all these switches, not only would this not correct the issue but there would be a string of irritated customers throughout Liverpool with a lot to say about it!
The emergency callout cost covers the first hour’s labour on site. During this time, we will test, fault find, trace any issues, and carry out diagnosis to establish WHY the switch is tripping. A switch will trip for a faulty wire in the back of a socket AND will trip if the electrical circuit cables are perished or badly damaged. The costs for repairs on these two jobs is VASTLY different. The first fault can be found very quickly and rectified with little to no parts, the second fault is likely to be much more costly and labour intensive!
Maintenance Plans to Prevent Electrical Emergency Issues
Whilst maintenance on an electrical system does not have to be carried out as often as oil changes on your car, it is still recommended that a professional electrician checks your system over every so often. An electrical inspection every 5 to 10 years is a great way to highlight any issues on the horizon. If you know that your wiring is particularly old then planning a rewire is far better than having to live through one. Why not disappear on holiday and have your home rewired whilst on the beach instead of having to deal with it whilst you are working or stuck at home?
As your local Emergency Electrician in Liverpool, we are here to help with all your electrical emergencies at any time of day. We would rather you didn't have an emergency in the first place of course so give us a call to arrange your electrical inspection if you have not had one carried out in the last ten years.
