2) Flickering Lights💡

Flickering lights are certainly irritating when they occur and whilst certain customers may think their home has been inhabited by a poltergeist, in reality it is much more likely that those flickering lights is actually a sign of an electrical issue that could be serious. If you have flickering lights in your home then please have them checked out by an electrician as soon as possible to rule out any serious problems. Electrical fires are more common than you may think. Electrical Safety First mention that there are over 20’000 electrical related fires each year and flickering lights could be an early warning sign.

3) Random Power Cuts🕯️

Random power cuts can be frustrating and even common place if you reside in a rural area. Power lines are often miles away from main supply sources and all sorts of incidents can happen along their route to take the power out. When you live in a more urban setting and the power is tending to go off then there is a bigger problem usually. First of all, call 105 to ascertain if there is a supply network problem for example the electrical cables in the street or substation problems. If they give the all clear then please search for an “EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN NEAR ME” as it is likely that there are electrical problems or even fire risks in your home.

Random power cuts indicate serious electrical issues and should not be ignored.

4) Fishy Plastic Burning Smell🔥

This can be a sign of an electrical installation in distress. When this smell appears it is usually indicative of burnt wiring or electrical sockets or switches that are failing. DO NOT IGNORE this smell. Please turn off the relevant item at your fuse board / consumer unit or call your local emergency electrician to come and investigate for you.
When plastic electrical items and PVC cabling become hot and begin to melt they give off this type of distinctive pungent smell.

5) Flashing Sockets💥

I would hope that most people would realise that flashing sockets are generally not a good sign. Whilst it is normal for a flash to occur in a dark room when a heavy, power hungry electrical appliance is plugged in, whilst turned on, it is not normal for sockets to flash with nothing else happening. When an electrical fan heater is plugged in to a socket there can be a spark / flash that is seen under the right circumstances. If the fan heater is turned on but not plugged in AND the socket it turned on when the plug is inserted

6) Popping Noises from Sockets & Switches👂

Again, I would hope that these kinds of issues would be taken seriously by everyone but you never know. If there are popping noises from sockets or switches this is an indication that there is electrical danger present and this should be dealt with immediately. A call to your local emergency electrician is the best way forward here. They should give you some immediate advice on the phone to make safe then attend as soon as possible to sort the problem out or provide a more permanent solution. Popping from switches and sockets indicates that the electrical supply is shorting out and causing miniature explosions at the same time. This is not a good situation! ☹

7) Loose Sockets & Switches⚠️

If you have loose electrical sockets or switches then it is VITAL that these are re-secured by a qualified electrician. Loose sockets and switches are a major electric shock hazard and should not be left. When sockets and switches are not secured correctly there can be gaps behind that allow fingers or objects to be inserted. There are live electrical terminals at the back of all sockets and switches that are not designed to be on display and pose electric shock risks when left open to the touch.

8) Shocks from Metalwork in the Home😧

If you are receiving shocks from metalwork in your home then an emergency electrician needs to investigate immediately. Metalwork in your home should not be LIVE and should not give you any kind of shock. This situation is indicative of poor earthing and other electrical issues and a qualified electrician proficient in electrical testing and fault finding should come and investigate.

9) Switches Tripping Regularly⏲️

We all have (or should have) an electrical box in our home that contains switches or fuses. When these switches trip, they do so because they are detecting an electrical fault within your home and its electrical wiring. These switches in your electrical box can safely turn off circuits and dispose of high electrical fault currents when needed. They are not, however, designed to do this repeatedly and will eventually fail if regularly tripped and reset.
If a trip switch turns off once then it is generally not a problem. If it trips multiple times then there is clearly an electrical fault in your installation. This should be investigated without delay. Check our help sheets section for free, no obligation advice on your electrical problems.

10) Fuses Blowing Regularly🤯

As with trip switches, fuses have the capability to dispose of electrical faults. Although not as technologically advanced as the modern RCD, MCB, RCBO, AFDD (Trip Switches) fuses do still offer some protection to the users of the electrical installation and the wiring and appliances themselves.

If you are replacing a fuse wire or a fuse as a regular occurrence then the cause of this needs to be investigate as there is clearly a problem.

11) Brown Outs👎

Similarly to power cuts, Brown outs are periods of low voltage disturbance to your electrical system. These disturbances can originate from the street and beyond back to the power station or from within your own electrical installation.

If any of these are a common occurrence in your Liverpool home then I strongly recommend that you seek the advice of an emergency electrician immediately who can investigate and make safe any electrical dangers relating to this issue.
