1) Water in light emergency💡
When you have water coming into your home it is difficult not to panic. If you are reading this because you have water coming into your home, keep reading and I will help.
Firstly. Go to your consumer unit / electrical box / fuse box / fuse board / trip switch box and turn the main switch off. This is the one that controls the whole electrical installation. It is usually on the far left or far right of your unit. On newer boxes, the switch is a different colour to the rest and is often red, brown or blue. In any event it is usually a double wide switch that looks like two switches together. On older boxes the switch may just be marked ON and then OFF when it is operated and may be a smaller looking switch.
Turn the switch OFF, this should plunge the property into darkness but at least make it safe for now.
Back to top2) Emergency Plumber? Roofer?👨🏻🔧
Once you have turned the electricity off, you need to establish if the water coming in to your home is likely to be a roof problem or a plumbing problem. If it is a plumbing issue then immediately locate the stop tap for your property. In older properties, this is often under the kitchen sink, behind the kitchen kick-boards or even out in the street if you cannot locate an internal one.
If you cannot locate this then you need to carry out an internet search for an emergency plumber immediately.
If the problem is a roofing issue then you may have to wait until the rain stops before a roofer is happy to attend and climb onto the roof! Grab some buckets and mops and catch the drips until the rain stops then give a roofer a call! 😊

Back to top4) What happens when you come out?💭
When you call an emergency electrician it is often normal to pay for the first hour labour at time of booking to secure the booking. Emergency specialists will tend to have several calls per night and in order to book you in they may require payment for the first hour. They will also require your email address, home address where the problem has occurred, phone number and occasional other details.
With us, once we have you booked in we are able to offer route tracking via Google maps sharing so you can see where we are, when we will arrive and so on. This gives our customers peace of mind that we are on the way and will be attending.
Once we arrive with you we will have a short conversation to find out what has occurred and then we will get to work. In the case of water entering electrical wiring and accessories, our first concern is to disconnect the affected circuits and make safe then restore what power we can. If this means that you are without sockets then we are normally able to install some temporary sockets for you until the leaks and issues have been fixed.
Back to top5) What happens after the leaks have been fixed?🤔
Once you have had plumbing or roofing repairs (don’t worry we can recommend people if needed) carried out then we are able to come back to see what damage has been done to the electrical system. Often, once water has dried out electrical wiring can be safe to reinstate, however, there are occasions when significant water ingress will have rendered electrical wiring and accessories unsafe to use. If this is the case then we will reinstate any electrical circuits that are safe to do so and have a chat with you about any necessary repair works, how these need to be carried out and issue a quote for the works in writing where necessary.
Back to top6) What are the typical costs for these kinds of electrical repairs?💷
That is an understandable concern and a the answer to the questions depends on a number of factors:
- Age of the wiring installation.
- Extent of damaged caused by water ingress.
- Condition of circuits from an electrical safety aspect.
Simple repairs including initial attendance and secondary attendance can run into a few hundred or more whereas circuits that have been damaged extensively and require repair or rewiring can see costs increase to a few thousand.
In any event, once we have made safe and got you some temporary power running (if necessary) we will give you a quote for the works.
