2) DIY Mishap

We all carry out a bit of DIY now and then. In fact, we are a nation of DIY lovers, possibly more so than any other country. With this comes a risk of electrical wiring damage. A drill bit that puts holes into walls can often damage cables and there is often no telling where the cables are buried. These days, we are supposed to adhere to wiring zones meaning that there are dedicated safe zones for electrical cables within the fabric of a building that should be avoided for driling purposes as they are likely to contain cables.

DIY electrical work also goes on. Whilst we advise against electrical work without the use of a professional, we are often called to put right some of these mishaps. Always happy to help of course. 😊

3) Damaged Cables

When cables become damaged in walls, floor, ceilings and lofts it is a danger and needs rectifying immediately. A damaged electrical cable is often a fire or electric shock risk and repair is needed. Most electrical cables are also incredibly vulnerable to damage and it does not take much to damage them or cut through them if you don’t know they are there.

Sometimes, damage on a cable cannot be seen and as such it is not immediately obvious that there is a problem. When a problem does become apparent through a switch tripping or a fuse blowing then it is necessary to obtaing the services of an electrician that specialises in fault finding in order to track down the damaged cables.

4) Switch Tripping

This is a common fault on electrical installations and something that customers call us regularly for. If you need an “EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN IN NEWTON LE WILLOWS” for this type of problem then we can definitely help. A switch that is tripping is unlikely to acutally be a faulty switch and is more likely to be an electrical problem in your home that is being detected by the switch.

What tend to happen, unfortunately, is that customers do not call us. They often keep resetting the switch until the switch finally breaks and then they call us. When this happens we have to replace the switch AND find the electrical problem that was causing the switch to trip. Finding the electrical issue can normally be done within a couple of hours but replacing the now broken switch can be a challenge depending upon the age of the fuse box / trip switch / consumer unit. The older the unit the more likely it is that the equipment is no longer manufactured and it can sometimes result in the need for complete replacemnt of the unit. ☹

5) Smoke or burning smell from electrics

This should be fairly self-explanatory. If there is smoke or a burning smell from any of your electrics then you should immediately turn off the electrical supply and call en emergency electrician to come and investigate the problem for you. This will not go away on its own and further use of the electrical circuit, equipment or accessories will result in further damage and increased fire risk.

6) Power Cuts

If there is a complete power cut in your home then you may wish to call 105 in the first instance to ascertain if there is a problem with the supply of if the issue lies within you house. Dialing 105 will put you through to the local supply network for your area and they should be able to tell you if there is an issue in the street such as underground electrical cables being repaired or if the issue is likely to lie within your electrical installation. If they tell you there is no issue then you must call an emergency electrician to come and investigate for you. That’s where we come in 😊

A power cut that originates in your home is potentially VERY SERIOUS!

7) Partial power cuts

If you only have a partial power cut then there is likely no issue with the electrical supply to your home from the street but an electrical issue that lies within your home instead. When there is this kind of issue, an emergency electrician is the best person to come and investigate for you. A partial power cut in your home could be a potentailly very serious issue.  Do not delay in seeking help for this kind of problem.

9) Flickering Lights

Fliekering lights can be a non-serious issue. A single flickering light in a row of a few is likely to be a faulty light, loose connection or a failing light fitting. All lights flickering is more likely to be an issue on the electrical circuit, the electrical installation or outside in the street. Whatever the issue with lights flickering, serious or not, it should be investigated by an emergency electrician without delay. The sooner electrical problems are dealt with the more likely there is to be a sucessful outcome. The longer problems are left, the more costly they can become.

This kind of issue can be indicative of loose connections leading to fire risk. It can also be an indication that your sockets have reached the end of their usable life and should be replaced. Every electrical installation is different in its construction, use and condition and as such each we will always advise best taking all this into account.
