Faulty boiler electrics

1) My Gas Boiler has stopped working

It could be a number of different things. Two of the most common are:
  • Electrical supply to the boiler has failed.
  • PCB inside the boiler has failed.
  • Faulty electrics to the boiler.

There could be a whole host of other reasons why the boiler has gone off but it depends on the symptoms. If the display is still working then the boiler still has an electrical supply and there is an internal fault within the boiler or the heating system that has caused the boiler to stop working.

If the display is not working then as above, there could be supply or PCB problems. Not just anybody can investigate faults within boilers. Only a Gas Safe Registered Engineer should be investigating gas boiler problems.

2) My electric boiler has stopped working

Electric boilers fail regularly if the installation has been carried out poorly. There have been many occasions where we have visited electric boilers to find that connections have burnt out, been improperly made or there are also faults that have occurred at the design stage of the electrical installation that now are causing issues.

If your electric boiler has stopped working the first thing to do is to consult the manual that came with your boiler and see if there is a troubleshooting or technical help section in the back. An electric boiler can have immersion elements that overheat and cause a thermal cut out to activate which then prevents the element from heating the water up until the thermal cut out has been reset.

If you have had no success following the help section in the manual then it is best to call us and we will come and investigate for you. Electrical installations are more complex and dangerous than you may think and a qualified electrician should be the only person to carry out work on an electrical installation.

3) My boiler sometimes works but then goes off

So, in the case of a gas boiler there could be a few things going on. If the display also goes off when the boiler goes off then it is likely there is an intermittent power supply problem. This could be loose wiring or a faulty PCB. The best course of action is to call us to come and investigate for you. We can pinpoint electrical issues in systems and boilers quickly. It may be necessary for us to order parts in order to get the boiler working again or if the issue is an electrical problem then we can normally solve this for you there and then as we carry many spare parts on board.

4) Why does my boiler trip my electric

This is because there is an electrical fault in your boiler or your heating system. Your electrical supply will normally have safety trip switch devices called MCB's and RCD's or variations thereof. These devices are designed to detect certain electrical faults and turn off the electrical supply when they see a problem.

Unless the problem is investigated these devices will continue to trip and unless the problem is fixed they will eventually break or allow cabling / parts / boiler to become damaged. Do not continually reset these devices without having the problem investigated.

It is very common for boilers and heating systems to cause a consumer unit to trip. Water and electricity mix in these systems and leaks can cause electrical problems. We regularly see valves and motors that have failed causing water ingress and electrical tripping.

5) Do I have a faulty switch in my fuse box?

Not necessarily, it is more likely that you have FAULTY ELECTRICS TO THE BOILER or a faulty component inside the boiler. Unfortunately, we are unable to help over the phone in many cases. Issues like this often require us to attend your property and investigate using our specialist electrical testing equipment. This allows us to see what is happening inside the electrical installation, lets us know what type of fault that is occurring and then allows us to begin to trace the fault. Faulty switches in a fuse box / consumer unit are not nearly as common as you might think and it is likely to be an appliance, cable or component that is faulty instead.

6) Do I need a new boiler?

Most electrical problems that cause boilers to go off do not mean that you need a new boiler. Boilers are comprised of many working components, many of which are powered electrically or have electrical controls. These components can occasionally fail and need replacing. Sometimes your Gas Safe Engineer may advise that it is more sensible to have the boiler replaced rather than worry about replacing components continually. Your boiler may become old and parts may be harder to source in which case it may be sensible to replace the boiler for a new model.

The decision to replace a boiler should not be taken lightly. Boilers are a costly but vital piece of equipment in our homes and they require maintenance and care in order that they can continue working at their best. We are always available for help and advice regarding electric and gas boilers. We specialize in investigating electrical faults, electrical testing and electrical works but we are also able to undertake other works.
My boiler keeps blowing fuses

If your boiler keeps blowing fuses then there is an electrical problem that requires investigating. At the time of writing, we are both Gas Safe and NICEIC registered. This means that we can investigate electrical and gas faults. Sometimes we are the best ones to call as we can deal with the problem in your boiler whether it is Gas or Electrical.

If you suspect that you have FAULTY ELECTRICS TO THE BOILER then give us a call and we will investigate the problem for you.
