1) I have a problem with my outdoor electrics can you help?

Lots of homes across the UK have outdoor electrical installations that run into the garden and often to sheds, greenhouses and outdoor office buildings. In fact, outdoor garden rooms became very popular during the Covid 19 outbreak as people worked from home and decided they needed more space. In order to use these spaces to their maximum potential we needed electrical installations in them.

Occasionally there are issues with these electrics and then there can be problems. If you have an outdoor electrics problem in warrington or surrounding areas then call us.

There are a number of problems that can arise when electrical installations are taken from the home and extended into the garden and it is rarely a simple case of chucking a cable across the lawn.

We regularly see the following affecting wiring installations outside:

  • Damp
  • Cable Damage
  • Insects and creepy crawlies
  • Poor installations methods

Any of these can give outdoor electrics a problem. If you have an issue with yours then we can definitely help.

2) Is there anything I can do myself?

There are sometimes things you can do yourself in order to help. If something has tripped in your consumer unit / fuse box then tell us what that might be and this might help us to pinpoint the problem. If something has tripped in your fuse box, is there another switch somewhere in the house that might turn off or disconnect the outdoor electrics?

3) Is there a smell of burning?

There is often not a lot that you can do yourself if your electrical installation has a problem and most electrical situations are best left to the professionals. Just because something may appear to be working ok does not mean that it is necessarily safe. If you have electrical issues it is best to get them checked before they develop into more serious and often more expensive problems.

4) The sockets in my garden room don’t work but the lights do?

There may be a small consumer unit or fuse box in your garden room, have a look for a box with some switches in it. Normally plastic or metal in construction. If you find a box and there is a switch in the down position, will it turn on?

There is a help sheet on our website called “Help my electrics are tripping” and it may be useful for you to have a read, it might just help to get your power back on.

If you have tried that and you still cant get the circuit breaker to reset then don’t keep trying, they are only designed to trip very occasionally and not continually. It may eventually break which will cause more problems.

If you have tried everything then best give us a call so we can come and investigate.

5) My garden lights won’t come on!!

If you have an outdoor electrics problem in warrington such as, outdoor lighting won’t come on or outdoor sockets are affected then firstly check your consumer unit / fuse box. If nothing has tripped then see if perhaps your lights run on a timer. Is the timer set correctly?

If at any point you are in doubt as to the safety of the electrics in your garden or outdoor space then do not touch them and call us instead. We will come and investigate for you and find any problems or safety issues. Garden lights are susceptible to the elements and regularly fail or trip the electrical supply due to moisture ingress into the electrical workings.

Another classic favourite for tripping fuse boxes or consumer unit switches is pond pumps and equipment. Whenever there is an electrical item submerged in water it WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL. If you have pond pumps or pond equipment and your electrical installation has tripped then try unplugging all this equipment to see if your consumer unit will come on again. If it does then it may be a case of trial and error to see which equipment is causing the problem.

6) I have unplugged everything outside but still have a problem

Have you checked for outdoor floodlights and outdoor sockets that are hidden behind things?

It is a common for us to turn up at a property and find all sorts of electrical accessories connected that the homeowner had simply forgotten about. It may sound daft but if something has been connected for years and has always worked then quite often, we never question it and will likely forget it is there.
