1) We were called to investigate an issue with a shower WARRINGTON. The customer thought there might be a FAULTY SHOWER.
When we got the call through a third party the information was not clear and we suspected that the shower pull cord isolator switch was faulty as so often is the case. These pull cord isolator switches regularly fail due to loose connections inside the switching mechanism, loose wiring in the terminals of the switch or just wear and tear causing parts to break off or become worn inside the switch.
When we arrived and spoke with the homeowners, we ascertained that it was the shower itself that was not switching on. As we were already on site it was a good idea to remove the cover and check the electrical connections in the shower as well as the isolator switch. All appeared to be good. So often electrical connections at the shower can burn out and this can go unnoticed until the shower actually stops working and the customer is left without the ability to wash!
It appears that the switch itself has failed on the shower and the customer has been unable to get hold of the plumber that fitted the shower in the first place so had called an electrician out to see if it could be fixed.
After a little bit of conversation with the customer and carrying out some research on their behalf, the shower appeared that it was still under warranty with the manufacturer and we managed to find all this information for them and forward this to them. This meant that the repair / replacement looked like it would be covered under warranty.
The customer was very happy with this result and so were we.
Whilst we do not tend to repair electric showers, there are occasions when parts can be replaced if needed. More often than not it is economically more sensible to have a new shower installed rather than seek replacement parts outside of warranty. If you suspect that there are issues with the pipework or water side of things in your shower then it is best to contact a plumber locally to have a look for you.
If you suspect there is an electrical problem with your fuse board / consumer unit, electric shower cable, pull cord or even the shower itself then you can call us to come and investigate for you. Sometimes we are able to give a quote over the phone and sometimes it will require site attendance and 1st hour labour to rectify.
One of the most common electrical problems in the home is a FAULTY SHOWER. If you are based in WARRINGTON or any surrounding area then we are able to help. Call us for advice and if it sounds like something we can fix then we will tell you. If it sounds like an issue that you may need someone else for then we will not waste your time or money. 😊 We have connections with other local trades people so sometimes we are able to recommend local plumbers, roofers, plasterers or other trades that might be able to help you out.
Back to top2) Can I do anything before calling an electrician?
Yes. There are a number of steps you can take that do not involve putting yourself at risk. Some of these prior steps may be helpful in deciding if we need to make a chargeable visit, can help us diagnose the problem for you and can give us a better idea of what the costs will be to put the problem right for you.
Back to top3) So….Shower not working?
- Have you checked the consumer unit / fuse board to see if anything has tripped? If you have a very old fuse board where you have no switches but fuse wire inside fuse carriers then you will need to check the fuse carrier for the shower to see if the fuse has blown. You need to turn off the electrical supply before doing this and if this is something you are not confident doing then leave it to us. If you have a modern fuse board / consumer unit with switches then will the switch turn back on? If not then we will have to attend. If the switch will turn back on has this solved the problem?
- If the consumer unit has proved to be unaffected in any way, then it may be that there is a problem further down the circuit. Assuming the shower has a light or neon indicating that there is a power supply, is the light on? If yes then there is power to the shower, if no then there is no power to the shower. Check the shower pull cord or wall switch if there is one.
- Does operating the pull cord do anything? If not then you will have to call us to arrange a visit.
- Is there a light at the shower pull cord and is it working? If it is then there is power to the shower pull cord. If it isn’t then there is no power to the shower pull cord and you will have to call us.
The list above is not exhaustive and is designed for someone to be able to check the basics before calling an electrician.
Back to top4) There is a burning smell… what shall I do ?
Firstly, turn the shower off at the consumer unit. This should be straightforward if there is a switch marked “shower”, if you have an old-style fuse board then you will need to pull the fuse for the shower.
Secondly, do not turn the shower on or attempt to use the shower AT ALL.
Thirdly, if there is any smoke or fire then do not attempt to extinguish it yourself. Throwing water on electrics is never a good idea. If you feel it necessary to do so then please call the emergency services for advice or attendance.
