1) My water heater in Warrington isn’t working, what could be the problem?

Well, there are often a number of possible causes for a water heater that it not working. These immersion tanks / water heaters have an element in them which is powered by electricity. There are not many other working parts other than these elements. This limits the number of things that can break or go faulty. When we went to this faulty water heater in Warrington we found that the water heater kept blowing fuses and losing power. When we investigated a little further, we found that the water heater element was leaking. This caused water to pool where the electrical connections are and was causing a short circuit to occur.

2) There are several things that can cause issues with water heaters:

  • Faulty elements can mean that although there is power to the element itself, the element has gone bad / burnt out / failed and will no longer heat up.
  • Leaking elements can mean that there are problems with water pooling above the element and shorting out connections causing fuses to blow or circuit breakers to trip off in your consumer unit / fuse box.
  • Failing elements that show no visual signs like above but rather are starting to degrade and causing slight electrical current loss to occur. When this happens a modern consumer unit / fuse board will detect this missing current even if it is a tiny amount, think that someone is having an electric shock and then turn off the electrical supply.
  • Elements that overheat causing the thermal cut out on top of the cylinder to cut the electrical supply to the tank.
  • The supply cable can be damaged to the element meaning that the water will not heat as there is not an adequate electrical power supply to the heating element.
  • Sometimes there can be an electrical switch that feeds the element. These are often vastly underrated for the power of the electrical heating element in the tank and can mean they burn out creating a fire hazard and power loss to the tank.

3) My water heater looks newer than the one above is it the same?

There are more modern versions of the above tank that sometimes contain two heating elements. These are popular systems where no gas supply exists to the property. In properties that have no gas boiler there is often more of a reliance on electricity to heat water and provide warmth in the home. The heating elements in these more modern tanks still work in very much the same way and things can go wrong with these in a similar way. The important thing to remember is that we are here to help and if you send us some photographs, we are often able to assist in some way before we attend.

5) My water heater is actually a boiler and there is a leak, can you fix this for me?

At the time of writing, we are Gas Safe registered and there is a good chance that we can not only repair any electrical issues for you but we are able to investigate issues within gas boilers for our customers also. If you are worried that your gas boiler needs attention then give us a call. We are able to electrically test all components in the boiler to find the faulty part. Common causes of water leaks in boilers are components that have failed or degraded. Valves and heat exchangers can become worn and leak over time.

6) My water heater has leaked into the electrics, can you help?

Yes, we can. We are experts in fault finding, emergency repairs and inspection and testing. We are able to determine if an electrical installation is safe to turn back on after a water leak, to make dangerous situations safe and to explain to you any process that may be involved in order to put your property right after a leak. Sometimes water ingress into an electrical system can mean that certain components need replacing afterwards depending on the damage.

7) My under-counter water heater isn’t working can you fix it?

There are certain water heaters that provide hot water in an instantaneous fashion for tea and coffee purposes. These tend to be small units that fit under counter in kitchens. When these appliances go wrong, they will often cause the homes electrical supply to trip until they are disconnected. Whilst we are able to disconnect appliances and parts of circuits that are faulty, we do not offer an appliance repair service. The cost of repairing appliances in comparison to the purchase costs of new appliances these days tends to mean that it is often economically more sensible to re purchase an appliance with a warranty than it is to have a repair carried out.

8) My water heater smells fishy, is this a bad sign?

Usually yes. Unless somebody has hidden a salmon in there it's usually a bad sign. Any plastic, fishy smell from an electrical system usually means that various components have started to degrade due to thermal damage, things can melt if they get hot enough and then there is a risk of fire.

If you smell any strange smells or suspect that you have an electrical issue then give us a call. We regularly attend jobs like this faulty water heater in Warrington and many areas surrounding.

9) What should I do in an emergency?

Turn your electrical supply off at the consumer unit / the fuse box  / the electrical trip switch box in your house. There is normally a “MAIN SWITCH” or large isolator. Switch this off and then call us immediately. We will need to attend to investigate.
