1) I think I have faulty wiring can you help?

Yes. We cover issues like FAULTY WIRING IN WARRINGTON and surrounding areas. If you think you have faulty wiring in your home then it is vital that you have this checked sooner rather than later.  Faulty wiring can lead to more problems and electrical dangers.

There are many signs of faulty wiring in your home such as:

  • Flickering lights
  • Crackling or popping noises
  • Losing power to circuits
  • Tripping switches at the consumer unit
  • Smell of burning

The above list is not exhaustive and there can also be other signs of faulty wiring. The consumer unit or fuse box in an installation has the job of protecting the cables from overload and damage it can also prevent the user of the installation from electric shock. This does depend of course on how old the consumer unit is and when it was last tested by an electrician.

2) What will you do to find the faulty wiring?

There are a number of fault-finding techniques that electricians employ when attempting to diagnose and pinpoint an electrical fault. We have specialist test equipment that enables us to see a picture of the installation, the condition of the wiring on each circuit and to inspect for dangers. This combines with a need for experience and good knowledge of testing and the ability to interpret test results and values. Without all these things it can be difficult to find an electrical fault.

We will often inspect a faulty circuit by dismantling the circuit piece by piece to narrow down the problem. This may involve removing several plug sockets from the wall and testing between them to find a faulty section of cable or perhaps removing several light fittings to find a damaged piece of cable.

3) Is my wiring too old?

There are ways we can roughly date your wiring system by visually inspecting it. Certain types of cable were only installed from specific dates and were not used beyond other dates and so on. This enables us to roughly estimate the age of your wiring system. The age of the wiring system itself is not always of significant importance however. Sometimes, the use of the electrical installation has a bigger role to play in how the wiring has faired over time. An installation that was installed 50 years ago but used very little, single occupant home and no alterations carried out, can yield test results similar to that of a new electrical installation. Whereas, a 25-year-old installation where a large family have lived and that has been used extensively, wiring extended to feed new sockets and lights, extra light fittings added all over the place and so on can show poorer test results than the first installation.

There are only a couple of instances where I would be able to safely say that the wiring in an installation was TOO old and is likely to need imminent replacement simply by looking at it. If you have FAULTY WIRING IN WARRINGTON, we are normally quick to find it.

4) We have never had a problem before so this must be simple?

Just because your consumer unit has never tripped before or the lights have never stayed off before does not mean that a problem has not been brewing beneath the surface regarding the wiring in the property. Insulation that covers the copper conductors in a cable can degrade over time to the point where eventually an RCD (type of trip switch) will begin to trip occasionally as current leaks from the circuits. In some older cabling green goo can leak from the cables and cause problems with the electrical installation.

Just because this problem may have occurred once does not mean that it is simple or cheap to fix.

5) I already know that the problem is a faulty switch in the electric box

Those switches in the electric box rarely go wrong. They only eventually give up if they have been reset too many times. A switch that trips does not indicate a faulty switch very often. More likely is that there is a problem in the electrical installation that needs to be checked by a qualified electrician.

The wiring we can see in the photograph above was causing a consumer unit switch to trip very regularly. As we can see, there is clearly a problem here with melted wires and not necessarily an issue with the trip switch in the consumer unit.

If you do have a faulty switch, we are normally able to source a replacement very quickly depending upon the age of the equipment, day of the week and time of day. Some stock we carry on the van and we do have lots of spares.

Nothing has tripped in the electric box but I have no sockets working?

Oh dear. This is definitely something that an electrician will have to investigate. This can indicate a serious failure or even burnt wiring or components. Whatever the cause we will find it as quick as possible and set about making sure that it does not happen again. There are numerous reasons that electrical failures can happen and we pride ourselves on putting things right.

Poorly designed circuits can see that cables are overloaded and not protected against overheating or catching fire. Poorly installed cables can put them at risk of mechanical damage. So many things can affect electrical installations that it would not be possible to list them all here. Do not worry though, we will have a chat with you when we arrive at your property to establish what has happened and then set about sorting the problem for you.
If you suspect you have FAULTY WIRING IN WARRINGTON or surrounding areas then give us a call.

We specialise in fault finding and repairs and we are normally able to get electrical installations up and running in an hour or so. Most faults take no longer than this however occasionally further time is required if issues are in inaccessible locations or require ordering parts to fix. We will always keep you updated as to our progress and let you know if further works are expected or required.
