The humble house alarm sits out the way, normally in an understairs cupboard or garage and does its job for years on end.
We rarely question it, we don’t ask if there is anything that needs to be done with this box.
We regularly get calls to houses where the house alarm is going off and creating havoc. Normally following a power cut we see that alarms do not want to come back on. A faulty circuit can cause something to trip in the consumer unit and cause power loss to a house alarm. When this happens, some alarms can be unhappy about this.
Alarms have backup batteries that need to be changed occasionally as they don’t last forever. We recommend that you speak with your alarm installer regarding the recommended service intervals for your alarm system. If you house alarm is not serviced regularly as recommended by your installer, we can find that they can break down. They always seem to choose the middle of the night to do this which is far from ideal we know.
The important thing to remember about house alarms is that they tend not to blare away continuously. They can often shut up after 20 minutes or so. Sometimes they can continually create a racket when they go wrong. This can be stressful for you and your neighbours and you will often just want the thing shut up so there is quiet once again in your street.
If a circuit breaker has tripped in your consumer unit then we will often need to attend your home in order to investigate the cause of this. If you find your alarm going off please make sure that it is not a false alarm and that you are safe from intruders. If you cannot reset your alarm then it is a good idea to check the consumer unit to see if there is a fuse that has blown or a circuit breaker that has tripped turning the power off to the circuit.
Just remember that whatever you need we are here for you. If you need us to come out and attend to disconnect your alarm for you then we can do this day or night. We will disconnect the panel, the batteries and where possible and safe to do so, we will disconnect the outside bell sounder as well. Sometimes these bell sounders are mounted in places that are hard or impossible to reach and in these cases we will normally just let the batteries in the bell sounder go dead on their own if it is too dangerous to disconnect.
If you find that you have a problem with your alarm going off then give us a call. If we can’t help over the telephone to you then we are always happy to come out and do what we can.
