When you are worried and have “NO ELECTRICITY” the first thing you need to do is check your consumer unit or fuse box to see if a switch has tripped or a fuse has blown. If everything looks okay and nothing is blown or tripped off then you need to call 105.
Calling 105 puts you through to your local Distribution Network Operator. They will be able to tell you if there is a problem with the electrical supply in your area. They could be undertaking emergency works in the street or on a nearby electrical transformer that has failed.
Back to top1) No Known Problems?🤔
If there are no known in problems in your area or street then there could be an issue with the electricity meter or connections to and from the electricity meter. If the meter appears to be lifeless and the buttons do not do anything then there could be a problem with the electric supply to the meter. If the meter is okay and comes to life when the buttons are pressed then there is likely an issue with your consumer unit / fuse box.
Back to top2) Next Step?💭
The next step now is to call an emergency electrician to ask them to attend. There is little else that you can do safely on your own and sometimes it is best to get professional help. A specialist emergency electrician will be able to diagnose the problem quickly once at your property. Then they can set about repairing the problem or making the electrics safe until further works can be carried out.
Back to top3) Burning Smell?🔥
If there is a funny, chemical, plastic type smell then this is typical of electric smoldering or burning. This could mean that connections have overheated and cause a short, failed to create a good pathway for electrical current to flow or something has failed due to melting or electrical burning.
Whatever has happened, if you can smell this smell then it is imperative that you contact an emergency electrician quickly. If there is smoke or fire then call the fire brigade and then call an emergency electrician.
Back to top4) Can the problem be fixed?👨🔧
Most electrical issues can be fixed relatively quickly. Occasionally, when electrical installations have not been maintained correctly or are particularly old, it is necessary to replace things rather than repair them. The nature of the problem dictates whether it can be fixed or not, for instance, aged rubber cabling in an electrical installation cannot be fixed. The solution is to rewire the installation to current British Safety Standards. BS7671. The cause of “NO ELECTRICITY” could easily be down to a poorly maintained, aging electrical system in your home.
Back to top5) What does it cost to repair No electricity problems?💰
This depends on what has caused the issue to occur. A failed component inside a consumer unit / fuse box will cost far less to repair than the total replacement of a burnt-out consumer unit / fuse box. One thing is for sure, if an electrician needs to attend to work out what has happened, they will not be able to give you a quote for repairs over the phone before they arrive at your property. There is no way they can guess what has happened and the cost to fix it.
You will need to pay for their first hour attendance, which in most cases, is enough to diagnose the problems and in some cases repair them also. 😊
