Sometimes we require outdoor plug sockets in our garden, on the outside walls of our homes or inside an garage.
When Christmas comes around there are lots of clients that decide they would like outdoor Christmas lights that they can plug in and enjoy over the festive period. Without an outdoor plug socket there isn’t much option but to leave dangling cords through windows, extensions leads hanging around and other inventive and often dangerous methods of getting an electric supply where it is needed.
We like to offer the safe solution for our clients. If you need an outdoor plug socket for Christmas lights then tell us at the time of the enquiry. There are different brands and sizes of outdoor plug sockets which work better with large transformer style plugs.
Perhaps you just need a socket in the garden somewhere for the occasional party? These types of sockets may involve a visit to your home in order to assess your requirements, examine and measure the garden dimensions, the consumer unit / fuseboard location and the type of electric shock protection that you currently have installed in your home (if there is any!).
The simplest way to install an additional outdoor socket is to find the nearest suitable power source on a circuit that is tested as safe with no defects and then install the outdoor plug socket as close as possible to that source. We do not simply turn up drill a hole and screw it to the wall!
The correct way of installing an additional socket to an existing circuit is to test the circuit to which we plan to install our additional socket before works take place. We must make sure that all your safety earthing to pipework is ok along with checking the earthing system to your property is giving us a good reading. We then make sure that the circuit we are going to connect to is suitable for the connection and that our additional outdoor plug socket will not add undue stress to the wiring or consumer unit components.
Once we are happy that everything is safe to proceed we will carry out the installation. Once the installation is complete we will carry out a few tests again to ensure that we have not affected any wiring or caused any issues.
All of our test results are recorded and stored. We enter the test results onto an Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. This is an important document for you. It lets you know that the work has been carried out safely, correctly and in accordance with the Wiring regulations BS7671. It also means that the person carrying out the work is putting their name to the work, they are stating that they have done the work correctly and safely. You receive a copy of this document for your records.
Nearly every electrical job carried out will require some certification of some kind, unless the works are very minor. Always ask your electrician if you are unsure.
The photograph above is an outdoor plug socket which we installed for a client who wanted two outdoor sockets, an outdoor light and an outdoor light switch.
