2) What do I do now?

There will be a number of switches in your consumer unit usually. These trip for different reasons and the reason is likely to be an appliance, a faulty cable or electrical accessory. The best thing you can do is read our help sheet first: https://www.electricalfaultsfixed.co.uk/helpsheet/help-my-house-electrics-are-tripping

This help sheet has been written by us to help you restore your power to your property. Sometimes this will not fix the problem and you may need us to attend to find out what is causing the issue. We are always happy to help with this.

3) Why do trip switches trip?

First we need to look at the type of trip switches that we typically have in a consumer unit / fuse box as they all trip for different reasons.

  • MCB – Miniature Circuit Breaker. This device trips when it sees a prolonged excess of demand on the circuit. It also trips is there is a sudden large current flowing that has been caused by a short circuit.
  • RCD , RCB, RCCB, RCBO – These are vital safety devices for you home and the electrical installation. These literally can save lives. These devices will limit the current that flows through your body in the event of an electric shock. These will trip when they sense a little bit of electrical current missing from the circuit. They are very sensitive and can also trip for lots of annoying little reasons at various inconvenient times throughout the year. 😊 In the case of the RCBO this device performs the tasks of RCD and MCB, very clever!
  • AFDD – Arc Fault Detection Device. This device performs RCD, MCB and detects electrical arcing in circuits. At the time of writing, these devices are relatively new to the domestic consumer unit market and are a little pricey.
  • Main Switch – This device is not designed to trip normally. It is there so the electrical supply to your consumer unit can be isolated.

Now, the reason these switches trip is to ensure that your electrical installation does not become overloaded, to prevent damage to cables and electrical accessories, to prevent electric shock and to ensure that all users of the electrical installation are protected and kept safe.

That is the intended reason these devices trip.

4) Why do they actually trip though?

Now, what actually happens is that they do this and more. Among them, these devices will also trip when:

  • Appliances go faulty
  • Wiring or electrical accessories become wet
  • Cables get crushed or damaged
  • The wind blows the wrong way (not true but can sometimes feel true 😊)

These devices make up a very intelligent and sensitive electrical installation which is fantastic for newly installed wiring.  We can however experience nuisance tripping in older electrical installations where aging cabling and electrical accessories are still in use but a new consumer unit has been installed to improve safety and update the installation. Sometimes you will find the POWER TRIPPED AND WONT COME BACK ON because these trip devices have failed!

5) "Nothing has tripped but everything is off?"

If you find that nothing has tripped but everything is off in your house just double check the consumer unit because one switch can trip and take out the power to ALL circuits. This is common with and RCD switch which will usually provide power to several or ALL circuits in the home. This device trips and then all circuits go off!

If absolutely nothing has tripped and there is no power to anything then it may be worth a call to the distribution network operator (fancy name I know). The DNO can be contacted on 105. They are responsible for the electricity supply to your home. Once you have navigated the inevitable telephone abyss you should be able to speak to an operator. They will be able to tell you if there are any power supply issues in your area such as a power cut or work being carried out on the electricity supply.

6) "I rang them and they said everything is fine!"

Well, looks like we are fresh out of ideas. It may be time to give us a call and invite us to come and look at your electrical setup. Please do us a little favor though? Make sure we can get to the consumer unit / fuse box. Now is the time for that under stairs clear out, moving the stuff in the garage or having all those coats out of the cupboard. Wherever your fuse box / consumer unit is hiding it is no doubt covered with an array of winterwear and outdoor accessories. 😊 Removing this for us just speeds up the process of fault finding.
We are happy to come out and get you powered back up, fix whatever is wrong and make everything safe.

8) How long will it take you to get here and fix the problem?

We will get there as quick as we can, normally within two hours or sooner. We will fix the problem as quickly as we can also. Within the first hour we will have some answers for you and a quote to repair IF we have not already fixed it. Occasionally we may ask for another hour if we are confident the issue can be resolved there and then.
The important thing to note is that we are open and honest and will always be straight with you. We endeavor to fix everything first time and as quickly as possible but there are circumstances that sometimes mean that is not possible.

Things that can affect this include:

  • Neglected wiring systems
  • Old and obsolete parts
  • Deteriorated cabling and installations that have never been checked

Like finding a broken wheel on a car to discover that, in fact, the whole car is actually rusted underneath and is a danger. Sometimes when we begin digging into wiring installations we can find problems that have been lurking.
If you find that your POWER TRIPPED AND WONT COME BACK ON then give us a call if you need us to attend.
