Sometimes it helps to have a one to one with an electrician when you have electrical emergencies. Not only can this assist with urgent issues but can negate the need for an emergency call-out, minimise the severity of the electrical problem and give you some peace of mind.
Back to topCircuit breaker issues are one of the most common electrical problems that can occur in your home. Electrical installations can go wrong at any time of day or night and when they do, electrical chaos can occur leaving you without power, tripping circuit breakers and potential serious electrical dangers. I have many years of experience in solving electrical issues and can get to the bottom of most electrical problems within the first hour.
Back to topPower outages are very common within an electrical system. The second most common cause of a complete power failure is a burnt-out main switch. The main switch is the component within the fuse box or consumer unit that feeds power to ALL the electrical circuits. If this device has become damaged you will definitely require an emergency electrician.
The most common cause of a power outage is local power disruptions so if you find that you have no electrics working in the house at all, then the best course of action is to call 105 freephone. By ringing 105 you can speak to the local electricity distribution network operator or DNO for short. The DNO will be able to tell you if there are any electrical emergency services taking place in your area that may be causing power cuts to your home. If you find that there are no local issues AND your neighbours appear to have power then you need to call me to attend.

There are a wide range of electrical faults that can affect the safety of an electrical circuit. Most electrical circuit issues are not caused by the wires themselves but rather the points at which the wires connect to equipment. For instance, it is fairly common for a light circuit to trip off because of poorly installed light fittings or failing components within the light fitting themselves. As an emergency electrician in Liverpool, I regularly attend to situations where lights have failed and the issue lies with the light or switch rather than cables.
Back to topA consumer unit buzzing may not be an immediate electrical emergency but it is best to have it checked out. Part of my electrical services involves speaking to clients on the phone and taking video calls to try and establish some of the information before attending. In some cases, we are able to fix the issue on the phone and no call-out fee is necessary. In more serious cases where the issue cannot be resolved on the phone, we can get as much information as possible about your electrics before attending.
A consumer unit buzzing can often be a doorbell transformer, loose wiring, electrical components failing and other issues. If you are very concerned about your fuse box or consumer unit buzzing then get in touch immediately.

Back to topPlug sockets are not designed to last forever and will eventually fail. One of the most common problems I discover when fault finding is a plug socket that has failed in some way. Burnt out connections, corroded metals and high electrical resistances can lead to plug sockets failing, switches tripping at the consumer unit and fuses blowing out.
Plug sockets are often overloaded and can suffer greatly as a result. Care should be taken not to overload plug sockets with high-powered appliances like dishwashers, tumble dryers, washing machines and other electrical equipment that produces heat like kettles, toasters, and electric heaters.
Plug sockets and plug tops for appliances can burn out through heavy use and burnt tumble dryer plugs are very common and can cause a plug socket and plug top to need replacing. In some cases, where wiring is damaged behind a socket, further electrical work may be required in order to make safe and perform safe electrical repairs.
Back to topElectric shocks are very serious and can cause injury, bodily harm and worse. There should be no reason to receive electrical shocks in a healthy wiring system so if you find that you are having electrical shocks then you likely have a faulty wiring issue. Electrical appliances that have gone bad can cause electrical shocks throughout the system, damaged cabling, faulty fuse box components and lack of safety earthing are all culprits for electric shock problems too. Check this article if you are having shocks from sinks and taps. If you are having electric shocks then you need a 24-hour emergency electrician to attend.

Back to topSmoke alarms that will not stop can prevent you and your neighbours from sleeping and the problems with smoke detectors always seem to occur at really inconvenient times of the night and weekend. When smoke alarms begin to beep continually, try changing the batteries or temporarily removing the device from its installed location. If the device will still not operate correctly after swapping then batteries then you may need a reliable emergency electrician to attend to diagnose the root cause of the problem. Whilst this may not seem like an electrical emergency situation, smoke detectors that do not work can be a real danger not to mention an annoyance to all with continuous beeping.
Back to topA loose plug socket can be a serious problem and danger, especially if live parts are exposed. At the back of plug sockets there are live metal terminals and live wiring. Anyone touching these could sustain a serious electrical shock and as such, loose plug socket problems should be attended to quickly before shorting out, shock or electrical fire occurs. In many cases, it is not possible to easily reattach a loose plug socket. Plug socket faces are secured in place by two screws through the face of the socket and two lugs on the back box that holds the wiring and socket in place.
Commonly, the back box will be damaged if a plug socket is loose and electrical solutions will need to be found to safely reattach the socket to the box. If you have electrical plug socket problems then get in touch before anything worse occurs.

Nobody wants their burglar alarm going off in the middle of the night. When this occurs, it can cause a great deal of confusion for homeowners. Waking up to the burglar alarm sounding can make you wonder if there is a burglar in the property, if there are electrical faults or if it is one of the neighbour’s alarms that you can hear rather than yours. Older burglar alarms rely on wiring and this wiring can become damaged over time. When wires on burglar alarms begin to fail or degrade, the burglar alarm can start to sound creating havoc.
Back to topHaving no lights in the property can be an electrical emergency situation. Without adequate lighting there is a risk of falling down stairs, tripping and injuring yourself as you move around your property. We will always attempt to help you out over the phone in the first instance with your lighting problems. If this cannot be solved easily over the phone then I will need to attend to investigate the lighting issues you are experiencing.
Back to topShort circuits are a dangerous electrical situation that mean huge electrical currents will flow through the wiring until a fuse blows or a circuit breaker trips off. Without adequate fuse box or consumer unit protection, a short circuit can melt electrical cabling, cause fires, and increase electric shock risk. If you have a trip switch problem with a circuit breaker then it is likely that you have a short circuit situation that needs rectifying. I can carry out emergency repairs where short circuits have occurred in your electrical system. If you suspect that you have short circuits or have circuit breakers tripping off then you will need professional services quickly!

Where you have switches that are tripping, the best course of action before calling is to physically pull all appliances plugs out of the sockets. Do not just turn off the sockets in the property as this is not the same as disconnecting the appliances and equipment. Once you are sure that all the equipment is disconnected, attempt to reset the circuit breaker or RCD trip switch. If the switches stay on then it may be the case that you have one or more faulty electrical appliances.
You can attempt to reconnect each plug to the sockets and see if the consumer unit trips again. This fix will not always resolve the problem and you may still need attendance from an EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN IN AIGBURTH.
If your switches still trip with everything unplugged then you will need an emergency electrician to come out and investigate the problem with sophisticated test equipment. Call me and I will help you.
Flickering lights can be indicative of serious electrical issues. Moreover, it may not even be the lights that are the actual problem and the issue may lie with other electrical circuits, the fuse box, consumer unit or cables out into the street. Where you have flickering lights and cannot safely identify the cause, please put electrical safety first and call me.
We can all agree that burning smells generally mean something has caught fire, melted, or is smouldering away. We can also agree that this is dangerous. Electrical disasters like burnt wiring, melted electrical plug sockets and other fire damaged equipment are common and especially so where electrical systems have not been adequately maintained. If you have issues like this then expert electricians are required to find the problem and safely carry out repairs.
Back to topMost electrical issues are resolved within one hour. Where issues are more serious, further time may be required in order to fully trace the issue or a no obligation free quote may be provided once diagnostics have been completed. Minor electrical faults are generally found and fixed within the first hour and for minimal or no cost in parts.
Back to topAs an emergency electrician Liverpool, I regularly see very old equipment that has failed. Where trip switches have failed inside a consumer unit or fuse box there can be issues with parts availability. Whilst I carry a fantastic stock of new parts, many consumer units are now obsolete, no longer manufactured or are simply unavailable. Lack of suitable, safe, and compatible parts can cause issues despite a stock room full of replacement parts.
Where your equipment is old, the worst-case scenario is that the consumer unit may have to be replaced. You can find consumer unit replacement costs on our costs page for a general idea.
When fault finding is required in order to trace and access electrical faults, access is needed to the consumer unit or fuse box, electrical sockets, switches, and other electrical accessories. In homes that have lots of furniture and personal possessions, diagnosis, tracing, and repair may take a little longer as you may be asked to make access to the areas I need to get to.
In some cases, electrical faults can be traced to certain points but still be hidden in the floor cavity. Where this occurs, a return visit may be necessary to rewire an affected section of wiring, replace a hidden junction in the floor or lift floors up using cutting and prying tools. Sometimes, repair works like this cannot be carried out late at night due to noise and dust. If it is necessary to return for further tracing and repairs, I will arrange this with you.
A worst-case scenario does not happen often but when problems occur with very old wiring it may be necessary to rewire the affected electrical circuit in order to safely reinstate the power to it.
