When electrical repairs need to be carried out immediately, you need an emergency electrician specialising in electrical problems and power outages. Electrical installations can fail at any time meaning that emergency calls to your local 24/7 electrician are needed.
Back to topThere are many kinds of electrical emergency and each depends upon your situation. Losing the lights in the property may not be an electrical emergency to many people if they are able to make do with floor lamps but could be construed as an emergency to someone that has poor eyesight and steep stairs!
Typically, the following situations could be deemed an electrical emergency and require immediate electrical work in order to ascertain the cause:
If you find that you have no sockets working yet nothing has tripped then it is likely that there are issues in the consumer unit, fuse box or electrical panel. Equally, there could be issues with the wiring of the electrical sockets circuit in your property.
When sockets stop working but the breaker has not tripped, it is important to turn the trip switch off at the consumer unit or fuse box. Failures like this are commonly caused by loose wiring and the risk of electrical fires is very high when failures like this occur.
One of the most common electrical issues is when an RCD device trips. These devices are vital to our safety in our homes and workplaces as they prevent serious electrical shocks. When one of these devices trips it can be for a number of reasons including, faulty appliances, a single faulty wire, short circuits to earth, moisture ingress into wiring or outside lights and many more possible problems in electrical systems.

Back to topThe best way of preventing an emergency situation with your home's electrical system is to ensure that regular maintenance is carried out. This is done by having an "MOT" type inspection of the electrical system. Proper safety checks take a few hours to a full day for larger homes. The electrical outlets, light switches, fuse box and wiring are checked over, testing and inspection is carried out and a report produced on the condition of the wiring system.
The report that is produced is called an Electrical Installation Condition Report or EICR for short. The EICR states any observations that have been made by the electrician when carrying out the inspection and a severity code is allocated to each. The codes on electrical installation condition reports are as follows:
Where necessary repair work has been highlighted during the inspection, your electrician will normally include a quote or estimate for the works that are required. You can find out more about codes on an EICR including which potential hazards attract which codes in our article here.
EICR certificates are needed regularly if a property is rented out, every ten years for privately owned domestic properties and in varying frequency for commercial premises. If you are a Bold Heath Landlord then you will require a certificate regularly.

Back to topThere are a variety of different electrical faults that can occur within a wiring system but the most common issues that we tend to see in our day-to-day works are as follows:
Short Circuits
Where wires touch, cables become damaged by screws or nails, appliances malfunction or wiring goes faulty, short circuits can occur. When a short circuit does occur, a fuse may blow in the fuse box or a trip switch may activate to turn the affected circuit off. A large flow of electricity (electrical current) occurs when short circuits appear and this can be very dangerous.
It’s important not to reset a trip switch more than once in a short period as they operate to prevent further damage to the electrical system. Resetting a trip switch repeatedly will cause wiring damage and more expense when a repair has to take place.
Cable Insulation Failures
Electrical cables contain metal wiring internally, copper in most cases. The wiring needs to be protected by a layer of insulation to prevent shorting out in between the individual internal live wires. Over time and through use the insulation can deteriorate and this will lead to insulation faults on the cabling. A faulty section of wiring can be replaced but the overall condition of the rest of the electrical circuit should be checked as faulty wiring can affect whole circuits.
If cable insulation has failed in one place, then it is likely that the rest of the cabling is not far from disrepair so this should be considered when thinking about repairs vs rewiring.
Missing Earthing
Many electrical appliances, sockets, switches, and light fittings can work perfectly fine without an earth but many REQUIRE an earth for safety. Where there is missing earthing there is a risk of electrical shock and serious injuries to those using the electrical system. Modern wiring safety standards require that earthing is run to every point in the electrical system whether it is needed or not.
Broken Circuits
When there is a break on a circuit, the lighting, sockets, and other electrical equipment may not work any longer. In some cases, there can be a broken circuit and all equipment will continue to work as normal. These are the most dangerous form of breaks in circuits as the wiring can easily become overloaded without the fuse box or consumer unit being able to 'see' the fault.
Electrical inspections offer peace of mind from such faults so if you own a domestic property that has not been checked out in the last ten years then seek professional help to have an inspection carried out. If you need an EICR Bold Heath, then get in touch.
