Back to topElectrical problems can strike at any time of day and will often require the services of emergency electricians to fix them. Any electrical issue can be potentially dangerous so repairs should not be attempted yourself. Typical issues that could be defined as an electrical emergency would be problems like:
Where there is a bad or foul smell coming from anything electrical it is normally indicative of electrical burning taking place. This is a very dangerous situation and should be dealt with quickly. Professional assistance should be sought as quickly as possible to prevent further wiring damage and risk of fire in the property.
Electrical burning happens when high resistances are in a circuit. These high resistances can be caused by heat, loose connections, tarnished metal terminations and other issues. When heat is generated, it adds to the high resistance that is already there and generates even more heat forming a circle of ever-increasing danger.
An RCD or Residual Current Device, is an important piece of technology in our fuse boxes and consumer units. Its main purpose is to prevent electrical shocks and save lives. The RCD device has a test button which should be checked every 6 months to see if the device trips and is therefore operational.
When an RCD trips, it does so because there is a fault somewhere. This could be a faulty appliance, faulty wiring, water ingress into the electrics or an almost unlimited number of other causes. The important thing to remember is DO NOT KEEP RESETTING the RCD. When this device trips, it often disposes of electrical fault currents and will be put under some stress whilst doing so. If this device breaks completely then you will require electrical repairs services to replace the device or, if obsolete, the whole consumer unit.
A circuit breaker is a trip switch in the fuse box or consumer unit. Its main purpose is to protect electrical cables from overload. There will usually be a circuit breaker for each electrical circuit that is present in the property. 2 or 3 circuit breakers for lights, 2 or 3 for plug sockets, 1 for the cooker, 1 for the shower and so on.
When a circuit breaker trips there are a variety of causes. There could be too many electrical appliances or too much electrical demand on the circuit which the circuit breaker is protecting and as a result, the breaker trips off. There could also be a short circuit causing the circuit breaker to operate, usually with a loud bang.
The other option is that the circuit breaker is potentially faulty or burnt out and will trip for this reason. In any event, it’s best to call an EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN IN ROBY to investigate the problem for you and carry out circuit breaker installation. Electrical repair services like this are specialised works requiring knowledge, specialised electrical test equipment and years of experience.
Where a fuse box or consumer unit is buzzing there could be serious issues with one or more of the components in the box. You should switch off the electrical supply if safe to do so and call emergency local electricians to check for electrical faults in the consumer unit or fuse box.
Light buzzing noises can be common from equipment like doorbell transformers but if there is a buzzing from a circuit breaker or other electrical equipment then it may be potentially dangerous and should be checked out.
If your electrical installation is suffering a power outage then it may be a local problem that requires no intervention from an electrical emergency service such as ourselves. If there are intermittent power outages then check with your neighbours to see if they are experiencing similar problems. If it’s just you, then it’s likely that you will need an EMERGENCY ELECTRICIAN IN ROBY to come and investigate the problem for you.
Where lights are flickering in your house, there can be several causes for this phenomenon. In some instances, there may be a low voltage in the local area that is causing the lights to flicker as normal voltage drops below their expected operating range OR there could be an issue with a dimmer switch on the electrical circuit for instance.
In some cases, the issue may be more involved than this and could be related to loose connections in the mains supply, the consumer unit or the electricity meter. Whatever the issue, we are here to help and can come and investigate the source of your power problems quickly and efficiently.
One of the most common electrical emergencies that we are called for is switches tripping in the electric box / consumer unit / fuse box / trip switch box. These switches often trip because there is a faulty appliance plugged in somewhere. If you find that your RCD is tripping with everything unplugged then you will likely have issues with the electrical wiring rather than appliances. If you need emergency electrical services then give us a call and we will be there.
Back to topWhilst we do not carry out general electrical work 24/7, we are happy to attend to your emergency electrical needs at any time. We always go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction when attending electrical emergencies and where possible, we make safe or carry out a complete repair every time.
Back to topBefore we arrive at your address, you will need to remove all items from around the fuse box / consumer unit to allow access for inspection and fault finding. Once we have established which part of the electrical system is affected, we may need you to move further belongings away from electrical sockets, switches, or other equipment so we can remove them and test the wiring. We will let you know as soon as possible what needs to be moved and why.
If your electrical equipment is smoking then call the fire service for advice. Explain the issue on the phone to them and they will determine if there is an emergency that they need to attend to.
Back to topFinding electrical faults can be tricky but electricians find faults by using specialist calibrated test equipment, knowledge and experience. Test results from our equipment needs to be correctly interpreted and checked against expected values to determine if there is an issue and to locate the issue. Most investigations start at the electrical panel and continue once the initial problem has been found.
In new systems, there is unlikely to be a wiring fault as the cabling is new. More likely is that there are appliances or equipment connected that is causing issues. These types of faults can be detected more quickly than faulty wiring tracing where floorboards may need to be lifted to find the issues.
Back to topThe only way to check for a safe electrical system is to perform a Periodic Electrical Inspection which takes several hours. These checks are carried out during normal working hours and not as an emergency service. If you would like free estimates regarding the cost of an electrical safety check/ periodic inspection then send a photograph of your consumer unit to info@electricalfaultsfixed.co.uk and I will get back to you with a quote. Photographs should contain the fuse box and all its switches.

For peace of mind, have an electrical check carried out as soon as possible if there has not been one undertaken within the last ten years (domestic properties). Our electrical safety checks come with professional advice and a lengthy report to enable you to make an informed decision on any electrical repairs that may be required. The newer the electrical system and fewer additions that have been done the more likely it is to be in top-notch condition. Electrical problems are more likely to occur where DIY or extensive alterations have been carried out the electrical installation.
Back to topMost out of hours emergencies are attended to within 90 minutes or less. Where emergencies occur during weekday working hours, there may be a slightly longer waiting time but don't worry, we will offer safety advice and assistance until we can get there to take care of your electrical problems.
