Electrical fault finding is the process of investigating WHY something is not working correctly and then narrowing down WHERE the issue is. There are two distinct parts to this process. As a FAULT FINDING ELECTRICIAN IN LIVERPOOL, I will discuss these with you now.
The first part is obtaining the WHICH
Which type of Electrical Fault is occurring. What fault is causing a trip switch to turn off, the lights to flicker, the sockets to work intermittently or the power to cut off.
Once the type of electrical fault has been established then work begins to establish which circuit is affected.
The second part is the WHERE
Once the initial fault has been identified, the next step is to determine which electrical circuit is causing the issue. This is not always obvious and only an electrician can say for definite WHICH circuit is causing problems.
This is done through the use of sophisticated electrical test equipment, knowledge, and experience. Narrowing down electrical issues can be very quick or can take some time. A great deal depends on the access to electrical sockets, switches, light fittings and the fuse box or consumer unit.
Back to topThe easier it is to remove various electrical accessories for testing and inspection, the easier and quicker it will be to locate electrical faults and repair them. Step 1 of the process is completed very quickly normally with step 2 taking a while longer.
Most electrical issues can be found within an hour and then depending upon the location of the problem, repairs can be done immediately on site or a quote may need to be issued in order to repair the problem permanently.
Back to topElectrical problems are a serious inconvenience but are also potentially dangerous situations that need rectifying. When the electrical system is not performing as intended, the power has gone off or there are strange smells coming from the fuse box, you have yourself an electrical emergency on your hands.
Electrical emergencies are situations where the electrical components in the system are malfunctioning, this could be faulty wiring, damaged plug sockets or problems in the consumer unit.
Various Electrical Faults can occur and the type of faults include:
The electrical system is one of the most neglected parts of a home as once it is installed, its ‘out of sight out of mind’. We don’t question something if it is working perfectly (or appears to be). The truth is, electrical installations need occasional servicing and maintenance just like cars do. Without essential maintenance, electrical power supply problems can occur.
Back to topA circuit breaker will not always trip when there are electrical problems. The electrical installation depends heavily on the fuse box or consumer unit for protection and without an up-to-date consumer unit then the installation may not be as protected as it could be.
Modern consumer unit technology is better than ever at protecting you from electric shock and protecting your homes wiring, electrical accessories, and appliances from damage.
When a circuit breaker DOES trip, its very important that it is not reset more than once. When these devices trip it is sometimes because there has been a minor issue, for example, a light bulb has blown. If these devices trip again after being reset then the electrical installation is telling you there is a problem.
All manner of electrical issues can happen:

Back to topThere may be a strange smell of burning that is affecting your property. The smell of electrical burning is rather pungent and will definitely be remembered once you have experienced it. It smells of a plastic type chemical odour. Some people describe the smell as a fishy smell.
If you smell anything like this then it’s important that you shut your electrical system off as soon as possible at the Main Switch to prevent any potential fire damage from occurring.
Once the power is safely shut off, try and find where the odour was coming from as this may save time later. Please call us on 0151 351 4011 as this smell of electrical burning needs to be investigated quickly to prevent serious damage and to reduce fire risk.
Emergency call outs are possible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Back to topWhere someone other than qualified electricians have installed electrical wiring, there can be issues that can give rise to electric shock risk of premature circuit failure. Professional electricians follow a strict 560-page document known as the Requirements for Wiring Installations or BS7671.
If this document is not followed then there are likely to be serious defects with the wiring and electrical installation that may result in safety hazards.
The Wiring Regulations or BS7671 for short, is a comprehensive document and set of rules that are designed by the clever people at the Institute of Engineering and Technology in the UK. The regulations outline what is and is not allowed in electrical wiring systems and details how to install equipment safely whilst carrying out the vital testing and inspection processes that go along with installation works.
Wiring can of course go faulty on its own, where wiring is subject to external factors such as rodents, moisture, excess temperatures or mechanical impact, wiring can fail.
Then there is the matter of the age of the wiring. If wiring is several decades old it is more likely to fail than newer wiring. Copper cables will last for several decades depending upon the use of the installation and wear that it has been subject to.
Where too many appliances are being utilised in the house at any one time, there can be the risk of an overloaded circuit. There are often many plug sockets on an electrical circuit but it does not mean that we can use every plug socket with appliances at the same time.
The electrical plug sockets and cables that feed them are protected at the consumer unit (or fuse box) by a circuit breaker or a fuse. This protective device is there to prevent cables catching fire through excessive load and will trip or blow when it detects that too much power is being demanded from multiple appliances!
There is of course the possibility that an appliance has gone faulty. If you are experiencing a circuit breaker tripping or a fuse blowing, a faulty appliance could well be the cause. Try unplugging all the appliances and resetting the device or swapping the fuse.
Back to topThe consumer unit often contains one or more RCD devices. These are a form of electric shock prevention device and will trip for a variety of reasons when they detect earth faults.
Earth faults are where an otherwise healthy electrical circuit begins leaking electrical current to earth either through a faulty appliance or through someone’s body that is receiving and electrical shock.
If you have unplugged everything and find that this device is tripping then it’s an electrical job for the right electrician. This is a situation that is an electrical emergency and will require a FAULT FINDING ELECTRICIAN IN LIVERPOOL to investigate the cause.
Back to topWe offer a wide range of electrical services as well as electrical fault finding. Once an electrical fault is found and located it will likely need repair works to put right what had caused the fault. We offer competitive prices and excellent customer service.
Our diagnostic equipment allows us to find electrical problems and carry out repairs quickly, without the right electrical test equipment, narrowing down electrical issues would be very difficult guess work.
Back to topWhere further repairs are necessary beyond the initial fault-finding work, we will give you a quote for these to be carried out and aim to do the work as soon as suits you.
Further works are often necessary where for instance, furniture and personal belongings need to be moved. This may only affect a particular room in the house but cables can then be accessed in the floor cavity for repairs.
Where there are issues with electrical outlets or plug sockets, some of these can be difficult to access for testing. Built in wardrobes are often an issue where plug sockets become buried behind them. If we think the issue may be with your plug sockets, we will always ask you to unplug everything and point out all the electrical sockets to us to save time.
