6) Installing a New Light Fitting

When installing a new light fitting, we always make sure that electrical safety is the first consideration. Older wiring systems may not have an earth wire which can be a problem for modern light fittings. Earth wires are vital to ensure that the light fitting cannot become live to the touch when electrical faults occur. 

In older wiring systems dating back to the 1970s and prior did NOT have an earth wire integral to the cable. This means that many modern light fittings should NOT be installed. Where the manufacturer of the light determines that an earth connection is needed then such a light fitting should not be installed unless there is a sufficient and continuous earth. Both of which will be tested before installation.

7) Consumer Unit Repair or Replacement

There may come on occasion where a consumer unit repair or replacement is needed and we carry out this as part of our electrical services. Domestic properties electrical installations are often interfered with by DIY attempts to repair wiring, install additional plug sockets and other jobs. Electrical work should be carried out by a qualified domestic electrician to ensure that the testing requirements of BS7671 wiring regulations are met. Failure to do so could leave the wiring installation in a dangerous state. 

A consumer unit repair or replacement is a fairly major electrical job requiring much electrical testing, inspecting and correct certification and as such should ONLY be carried out by someone with sufficient knowledge and expertise to ensure safety requirements are met.
